“To be absolutely clear: The outcome of Mr. Rupkey’s case does nothing to affirm the policies and procedures at Virginia Tech. It certainly does not absolve the 'leaders' who remain in positions of power, giving lip service to the concepts of honor and integrity while whispering to reporters about an imaginary victory. The University and its Corps continue to be a tone-deaf embarrassment to both higher education and military tradition."

Virginia Tech breached confidentiality with cadet lawsuit statement, lawyers say
STATEMENT REGARDING THE MATTER OF LIAM J. RUPKEY v. VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE AND STATE UNIVERSITY, ET AL:
Last night, the Roanoke Times published an article containing statements from University officials that violated the terms of a confidentially agreement that Virginia Tech, itself insisted be included in a settlement earlier this year.
The following is Mr. Rupkey's response:
"The level of hubris on display at Virginia Tech is shocking — even for the most pessimistic among us.
To be absolutely clear: The outcome of Mr. Rupkey’s case does nothing to affirm the policies and procedures at Virginia Tech. It certainly does not absolve the “leaders” who remain in positions of power, giving lip service to the concepts of honor and integrity while whispering to reporters about an imaginary victory. The University and its Corps continue to be a tone-deaf embarrassment to both higher education and military tradition.
School officials offered Mr. Rupkey an opportunity to expunge his disciplinary record and return to the Corps of Cadets free from the lies and distortions that led to his punishment in the first place. During negotiations that spanned nearly a year, those same people led Mr. Rupkey to believe that they were open to reviewing the culture and policies that created this mess.
Mr. Rupkey reluctantly accepted the University’s offer for expungement in order to avoid further delay to his military career. Though he was offered the opportunity to return to the Corps, Mr. Rupkey refused. He did not believe that he could trust his career to the same corrupt leaders who spent the past year defaming him. Based on their most recent public statements, it appears his concerns were well-founded."
