We spoke with Chris Nannemann, president of the Wyoming Horseshoe Pitching Association, and asked him to break down the official rules so we can learn how to pitch properly. See them all on the Filson Journal. #FilsonLife FILSON.COM The Official Rules of Horseshoes | The Filson Journal

When you think of tasty game meats, black bear might not even come to mind. But not only is bear meat edible, it’s also delicious. In 1972, as part of the Open to Entry homesteading program, Captain Steve Mahay moved to Talkeetna and bought a 16-foot Jon boat. He equipped it with a 20-horsepower Mercury engine, converted it with a jet outboard, and started running the river as a riverboat guide. Later, he would become the first man to take a boat through Devils’ Canyon’s entire stretch on the Susitna River, a twelve-mile-long gorge loaded with class six rapids. Sculptor Zackarya Leck’s hands tell a story: they’re scarred from decades spent coaxing life and a livelihood out of iron, stone, and wood. A blacksmith by trade, Leck got an early start watching and later assisting his blacksmith father, Andrew Leck, and his mother, Phyllis Leck, a weaver and textile artist. Since 2001 he has operated his own forge on Orcas Island, northwest of Seattle in Washington state. His studio executes a wide range of commissions, from large public art pieces to delicate personal objects like wedding bands and belt buckles. According to Leck, “there’s no such thing as scrap metal,” where others might see nothing more than a discarded oil tank, Leck sees the raw materials for his next sculpture. Cacciucco is an Italian fish stew native to the western coastal towns of Tuscany dating back as early as 1891. We tapped our friend and chef, Rossano Russo, to create a cacciucco recipe that calls for freshly caught fish from the coastline near our home in the Pacific Northwest. In a cold cabin or after a wet day out in the field, this stew is sure to hit the spot.
