This Black History Month we will be highlighting AMAZING Hoosiers who changed the world! This week we honor Madam CJ Walker. Born to enslaved parents, Madam CJ Walker was the very first woman to become a self-made millionaire! She recruited thousands of black women to work for her, building a message of self-empowerment and philanthropy into the heart of her company. She moved the headquarters to Indianapolis in 1910 for easy access to the railway system and because of the large population of potential customers. The building, now the Madam Walker Legacy Center, is a cultural hub for downtown Indianapolis that still promotes the ideals Madam Walker believed in. https://www.history.com/topics/black-history/madame-c-j-walker HISTORY.COM Madam C. This Black History Month we will be highlighting AMAZING Hoosiers who changed the world! This week we honor Macon Bolling Allen. Macon Bolling Adam was born in Indiana in 1816, and as he grew up he taught himself to read and write. He pursued the study of law, and even though he faced resistance from white committee members, he was able to pass the bar exam in 1844 and became the very first African American lawyer in the US. He kept working despite experiencing violence, and eventually became the first African American judge in the United States as well. https://www.blackpast.org/african-american-history/allen-macon-bolling-1816-1894/

This Black History Month we will be highlighting AMAZING Hoosiers who changed the world! In 1862 Lucy Higgs Nichols escaped slavery in Tennessee and volunteered to be a nurse for the 23rd Volunteer Infantry of Indiana. Lucy became a beloved nurse, and was an integral part of the unit until the emancipation proclamation was signed. After the war, Lucy applied for a pension and was rejected twice. Her unit petitioned the government on her behalf, and she was granted a pension through a special act of congress. She became famous throughout the US because her story was widely reported in newspapers. She lived in New Albany and was cared for by her soldiers when she became ill and passed away in 1915. Her church memorializes her service and bravery with a beautiful statue of Lucy and her daughter Mona, who passed early in the war. https://www.newsandtribune.com/news/statue-of-new-albanys-lucy-higgs-nichols-unveiled/article_efd1ffa6-9deb-11e9-a28f-e3becbb4942e.html

This Black History Month we will be highlighting AMAZING Hoosiers who changed the world! Katie Beatrice Hall was the first African American representative from Indiana to congress. Having been born in the 30s in Mississippi, she recognized the importance of Dr. King in the fight for civil rights, and one of her major accomplishments was introducing the bill that would establish Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a national holiday. She successfully negotiated with the opposition and 15 years after Dr. King’s assassination, the final vote was 338 to 90 to honor him with a national holiday. https://history.house.gov/People/Detail/14359
