It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our own, Mike Kardos. Mike has been with the First Class family for many, many years. To most he was more than a co-worker but was considered a friend as well. Please take a moment to say a prayer for his family and friends, as this is a huge loss for all of us. He will be dearly missed.
If you have an old fireplace, it is costing you money. Heated or cooled air escapes up the chimney, increasing your heating and cooling bills, and lowering the efficiency of your HVAC system. New fireplace inserts prevent this, while still allowing you to enjoy a great blaze.
You can easily save energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to 68°F while you're awake and setting it lower while you're asleep or away from home. Using a programmable thermostat, you can adjust the times you turn on the heating according to a pre-set schedule. Programmable thermostats can store and repeat multiple daily settings that you can manually override without affecting the rest of the daily or weekly program.
Are family members sniffling and sneezing more indoors than they are outside? It could be the quality of the air in your home. The first step? Replace your HVAC filters with the highest HEPA-rating products you can find.

One of the great things about becoming a tradesperson in the HVAC field is that it is organic – always growing and evolving. New technologies are developing every day, keeping the industry fresh and exciting as you continue to learn more and more.
When a home is not properly insulated, the HVAC system has to work harder than it was built for, shortening its service life. Increase your home’s insulation to the level recommended for your region and HVAC system.
Do you know that on average, HVAC repairs tend to cost substantially more than any other appliance in your home? Fridges and freezers come next with an average repair cost of $348.
Today is national Hot Chocolate day! Few beverages are as deep-rooted in the culture of Americans’ collective childhood quite like hot chocolate. This drink reminds us of raining days, skiing, sledding, or even a quiet day watching the snow fall. Tell us what is your favorite way to enjoy a nice hot cup of hot chocolate?
Why Encapsulate Crawl Spaces
Since up to 50% of household air can flow up from your crawl space, it’s important to keep it as clean and dry as possible. Adding a crawl space vapor barrier and dehumidifier is widely accepted as the best way to improve indoor air quality and make energy improvements inside your home.
Water vapor enters the crawl space from the ground (even through cement), leading many people to encapsulate their crawl space to keep the moisture out.
Benefits of Creating a Vapor Barrier
Improved air quality in your crawl space and home
Creates inhospitable area for pests and wood-destroying insects
Allows for more comfortable living conditions
Avoid fungi/mold issues and structural damage
Greater energy efficiency in your home
Some of the common locations of plumbing leaks that lead to water damage in our homes are toilets, sinks, dishwashers, water heaters, ice makers, washing machines, and showers and tubs. If you are having issues with leaks don't hesitate to give us a call today!

Tankless Water Heater or Tank Water Heater?! The big question that comes up when its time to think about replacing outdated hot water heaters For homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, demand water heaters can be 24%–34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters. They can be 8%–14% more energy efficient for homes that use a lot of hot water -- around 86 gallons per day. You can achieve even greater energy savings of 27%–50% if you install a demand water heater at each hot water outlet. The initial cost of a tankless water heater is greater than that of a conventional storage water heater, but tankless water heaters will typically last longer and have lower operating and energy costs, which could offset its higher purchase price. Most tankless water heaters have a life expectancy of more than 20 years. They also have easily replaceable parts that extend their life by many more years. In contrast, storage water heaters last 10–15 years.
Do you hear your water running even when no one’s using it? This is a good sign that you have a leak somewhere in your plumbing system, including in the walls or underground. Fortunately, a pro will be able to track down the leak through the ground.
Some technical schools offer job-shadowing opportunities, which involve spending time with and observing someone who works in your chosen field. If you’re studying HVAC technologies, then you might spend a day shadowing an established HVAC technician, mechanic, or installer.
Did you know Air conditioning systems helped coin the term “Summer Blockbuster.” One of the first businesses to utilize air conditioning technology back in the early part of the twentieth century were movie theaters. In the 1930’s, patrons flocked to theaters to enjoy the films – but also to enjoy the cool air during summer months. Marketers took advantage of this trend and saved their big hits for summertime releases. Thus, the term “Summer Blockbuster” became a part of our vocabulary
