Pie With Spirits "This is the very pumpkin pie my grandmother made—almost. She was a modern woman who knew how to follow recipes. Receipts, she called them, because they had been received. She had a rule for pie crust that was constant until, from time to time, it changed. I have that rule, in turn, and it had moved on, just a bit, from where she left it. This is my special shared moment with her, departed a quarter century. As I work, I am all ages of myself, and the thought of my tall son comes to join us, though he hardly knew her. He makes pies with wild abandon, sculpting them from material and artistry. He has received pie somehow at the level of soul. The three of us make pie together, preheating the oven, cutting butter into flour, adding water, flouring a board, rolling the crust. To honor her, I follow the recipe. To honor him, I change just one thing. To honor myself, I take my time and smile. —Mary Wellemeyer Admire the Moon Skinner House November 22 at 11:00 AM · Pie With Spirits "This is the very pumpkin pie my grandmother made—almost. Celebrate the Winter Solstice! The Winter Solstice, falling on Monday, December 21, 2020, marks the shortest day and longest night of the year, and the beginning of a new season. For many traditions, it is an invitation to pause, reflect, and honor the sacredness of both light and darkness. Seasonal transitions, and winter especially, may also offer an important window into revealing how climate change is affecting local ecosystems, and our own physical and emotional responses to these shifts. https://uuministry4earth.z2systems.com/track//servlet/DisplayLink?orgId=uuministry4earth&emailId=df6016b5fc097b47a9340e908dc9e449dm9193501df6&&linkId=17019&targetUrl=https://www.uumfe.org/2020/12/18/celebrate-the-2020-winter-solstice/ UUMFE.ORG Celebrate the 2020 Winter Solstice! | Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth

This week's Braver/Wiser reflections come from a good friend of Rev. Aaron, the Rev. Kristin Grassel Schmidt. "It’s been tough to make sense of last Wednesday’s attack on the Capitol, let alone what we’re called to do in its aftermath. Many leaders have called for healing, forgiveness, and unity. Now, I believe in forgiveness, and I very much want healing and unity for this nation. But none of those things is possible without repentance, accountability, and a full reckoning of wrongs done." #CelebratingBlackHistoryMonth! Benjamin Bradley was born in 1830. While he was technically still enslaved, he worked at the U.S. Naval Academy to help set up experiments for the teachers. He was able to keep $5 of his salary a month; the rest went to the plantation owner. He began to experiment with scarp metal and built steam engines, which could run a small boat. By 1856 he had created the first United States steam engine big enough to power a war ship. With the money he earned for his steam engines, Bradley was able to purchase his own freedom. Do you love potato chips? Thank inventor and chef African American George Crum. He accidentally invented the potato chip when working at the Cary Moon's Lake House in 1853 [!] in Lake Saratoga, NY. A diner complained that the fries were too thick, so Crum made thinner fries--and the diner still complained. Crum then sliced the potatos so thin they could not be picked up by a fork., ti frustrate the diner, but he loved them and the rest is history! His invention became known as Crum's Saratoga Chips when other locals asked for them. He opened his own restaurant, Crum's House near Saratoga Lake which would have potato chips on every table. #CelebratingBlackHistoryMonth https://www.blackpast.org/?s=crum BLACKPAST.ORG Search Results for “crum”

Today's Braver/Wiser reflection: When Rev. Lora Brandis went into a hospital chapel last year on Ash Wednesday, she recalls, "I wanted someone to impose the ashes on my head with the usual words: 'Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.' Those were the words spoken by my colleague as we gathered just a week earlier [at] my daughter Zoe’s memorial service. Rev. Aaron [White] prayed, and placed ashes in each of our hands saying, 'From dust we come, to dust we will return.'" UUA.ORG Connected by Mortality

Rev. Aaron has been running a reading poetry as a spiritual practice group on Wednesdays morning and some Tuesday evenings. Here's the poem from this morning's group - Love After Love By Derek Walcott The time will come when, with elation you will greet yourself arriving at your own door, in your own mirror and each will smile at the other's welcome, and say, sit here. Eat. You will love again the stranger who was your self. Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart to itself, to the stranger who has loved you all your life, whom you ignored for another, who knows you by heart. Take down the love letters from the bookshelf, the photographs, the desperate notes, peel your own image from the mirror. Sit. Feast on your life.
#CelebratingBlackHistoryMonth Sissieretta Jones (1869-1933) was a soprano singer and considered one of the greatest singers of her time. In 1888 she became the first African American to sing at Wallack's Theater on Broadway. #CelebratingBlackHistoryMonth Meet Bessie Coleman (1892-1926) American civil aviator, know as "Queen Bess." She was the first woman of African-American and Native American descent to hold a pilot license and the first American to earn an international pilot's license. In 1921 she received her international pilot license in France because no flight school in America would train a woman of color. Coleman’s dream was to own a plane and to open her own flight school. She gave speeches and showed films of her air tricks in churches, theaters, and schools to earn money. In 1926 she fell to her death while practicing for one of her famous stunt shows. Evidence later indicated her pan may have been tampered with. Famous activist Ida B. Wells-Barnett performed the funeral service to honor Coleman in Chicago. In 1931, the Challenger Pilots’ Association of Chicago started a tradition of flying over Coleman’s grave every year. By 1977, African American women pilots formed the Bessie Coleman Aviators Club. In 1995, the “Bessie Coleman Stamp” was made to remember all of her accomplishments. She was at last inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2006. Our denomination joins leaders across the country in decrying the recent surge of hate crimes against Asians and Asian Americans. #StopAAPIHate We call on federal, state, and local governments to send the clear message that such actions will not be tolerated. And we are in solidarity with victims, survivors, and families who have suffered loss and pain. We know these acts of violence are rooted in the same white supremacy and hate that takes the lives of Black, Indigenous, and Latinx people. UUA.ORG The UUA Decries Anti-Asian Violence
