Our pets can't tell us when something is wrong, but they may show it. Do you know how to recognize signs of pain in your pet? 🤕 PETFUL.COM Recognizing and Controlling Pain in Dogs, Cats, and Other Pets
Happy Toothsday! This is a condition called brachygnathism, sometimes called an overbite or parrot mouth. This kitten has a lower jaw that is too short in relation to its upper jaw causing malalignment of its teeth. As shown in the first picture, the canine teeth of the lower jaw are starting to stab into the roof of the mouth, creating the hole on one side. As this kitten’s mouth matures, this condition will only get worse, causing great discomfort. The answer to this kitten’s problems is a complete evaluation by a veterinary dentist followed by probable crown reduction and root canals of the canine teeth. #toothsday #denistry #beterinarydentistry #brachygnathism #veterinarian #veterinarymedicine #fortmyersvethospital #fortmyersveterinaryhospital

Grapes 🍇 and raisins can be a tasty snack - for humans! Many people are not aware that these fruits can potentially cause acute kidney failure in dogs and cats. The exact mechanism is not known, and some dogs may be more susceptible to problems than others. Because small amounts have been known to cause problems, it is best to avoid giving any grapes or raisins to your pets. The grape seed extracts found in some pet supplements appears to be safe, however. If your pet has eaten grapes or raisins, please call us for more information. #wednesdaywisdom #themoreyouknow #toxicity #grapes #raisins #veterinarymedicine #veterinarian #fortmyersvethospital #fortmyersveterinaryhospital

Time for some Friday Flea Facts! There are “cat fleas” 🐱(Ctenocephalides felis) and “dog fleas” 🐶(Ctenophalides canis), but dogs most commonly get cat fleas! Different species of fleas can transmit various diseases including ones that humans can acquire.😱 Fleas have a life cycle that includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult fleas can emerge from their cocoons in as little as 8 days or as long as 7 months. After a female flea has a blood meal, she can start producing eggs within 20-24 hours and she can produce up to 50 eggs per day! Flea control can involve treating all pets in the household, as well as the indoor and outdoor areas. Fortunately, there are many effective treatments that allow good flea control! Call us if you would like to know more about these!
This cute kitten’s mouth was featured in a recent post because her lower canine teeth were malpositioned, due to a short jaw, and were stabbing into the roof of her mouth (second photo). Fortunately, this little girl was taken to the Pet Dental Center where she received treatment for her problem. The veterinary dentists there reduced the height of the lower canine teeth and sealed them with a root canal procedure. Now she has a pain free mouth! #petdentistry #brachygnathism #kitten #veterinarymedicine #veterinarydentistry #veterinarian #petdentalcenter #fortmyersveterinaryhospital #fortmyersvethospital Sent from my iPhone

Today is Pet Obesity Awareness Day. Meet Baby Girl - also known as BG. BG was adopted when her original owner could no longer care for her and was worried that she might be nearing the end of her life since all she did was sleep and eat. BG weighed 13.8 pounds and was considered morbidly obese. Obese pets are much more likely to have a variety of illnesses and have a shorter, more uncomfortable life. This little girl was lucky, however! She was adopted by a caring mom who immediately put her on prescription weight loss food and started her on a careful exercise program. Tune in tomorrow to see the result of BG’s weight loss journey! #petobesityawarenessday #petobesityawareness #babygirl #BG #chihuahua #veterinarymedicine #veterinarian #fortmyersveterinaryhospital #fortmyersvethospital 📸 Mary Snow ❄️

It feels like we’ve been waiting for the weekend forever! Are you ready for Halloween? Make sure your pets don’t have access to candy or open flames from candles. If your dog or cat gets spooked easily and might try to run out the door during trick-or-treating, put them in another room with the door closed. Let’s stay safe out there tomorrow! #TGIF #friday #halloween #halloweensafety #trickortreat #safepets #veterinarymedicine #veterinarian #fortmyersveterinaryhospital #fortmyersvethospital

We can all agree 2020 has come with it's challenges and difficulties. This is especially true for one of our very own Technicians, Mary Snow. Her precious cat Thunder passed away unexpectedly last night. No matter how a pet passes, the following days, weeks and months are some of the most difficult. Thunder was a great pet whom Mary owned since he was a kitten. He was only 7 years old. If 2020 has taught us anything, time is a treasured gift. Be sure to spend your time with those you love because we just never know when it will be our last. 😞 Rest in peace sweet boy. ❤
