Fran Weiss maintains a private psychotherapy practice on the Upper West Side, NYC, for over three decades. She treats college aged young adults and adults in individual and group psychotherapy. Her clinical specialty is in working with the underlying emotional issues related to weight regulation, eating disorders, diabetes, and body image issues. Other clinical focuses are relationship and attachment issues, balancing executive stress with family life, life transitions, anxiety issues and trauma, women's health issues.
Trained in traditional psychodynamic talk therapy, she practices from a modern psychoanalytic and attachment informed model with special expertise in group psychotherapy. She is also trained in stress reduction strategies; mindfulness techniques; and sensorimotor psychotherapy. Central to her work is the psychological sequelae of early attachment and relational trauma
Fran Weiss holds a dual faculty appointment as Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health and the Department of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, NYC. Known for her pioneering work in the psychodynamic causes of dysregulated overeating and body image issues, she has been the Senior Psychotherapy Consultant to the clinical arm and NIH studies of the New York Obesity Nutrition Research Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in affiliation with Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons and Weill Cornell Medical College , since 1979. This is inclusive of the Joslin Clinic; United Weight Control Corp.; Theodore Van Itallie Center for Weight Management; The Weight Control Unit. The NIH studies, LIFT: Lifestyles Intervention for Two; Diabetes Prevention Program; Look Ahead Study. She is also a resource specialist for the Center for Sleep Medicine at New York - Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Fran Weiss is on the Board of Directors of the International Board for Certification of Group Psychotherapists of the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA), and Chairs its Standards Committee. She is also on the Editorial Board of both the American Journal of Psychotherapy, and Group: Journal of the Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society.
Fran is published in peer reviewed professional journals. She trains, teaches and runs workshops for professionals nationally on the etiology and treatment of eating dysregulation, attachment trauma, and body image issues.
