Illinois Senator John Curran who represents our 41st District was a welcome visitor along with his District Director Ande Corbin recently. They were at Mother Theresa Home of Franciscan Village donating 2,500 masks for our use as the Covid health pandemic continues. The gift of masks was made through Senator Curran on behalf of the Taiwan Council for those on the front lines of care during the health crisis. Executive Director Dan Bannon accepted this gift on behalf of Franciscan Village. Senator Curran and Dan Bannon were able to have a conversation regarding issues that affect our residents, associates and community. The Senator plans to bring those issues with him to discuss with our leaders at the State Capital as they look to get firsthand knowledge of what help is needed and can be provided during this health crisis. 🍁October Wellness Tips🍁 Fun, Stress-Relieving Activities to Try: Here are a few fun (and socially distanced) ways to keep calm and bring out your inner child. 👩‍🍳Bake a new recipe. Use your five senses to reach a state of relaxation and peace. There are many self-soothing skills involved with baking. Take bread, for example: you’re using the sense of touch when kneading the dough, sight when watching the bread rise, smell when it’s baking, and taste when eating it. 🎨Try your hand at art. You don’t have to be a professional. Draw a scene on your driveway with sidewalk chalk, pick up a paintbrush and learn about the different ways to paint (watercolor, acrylic), or simply color in a coloring book. There are coloring books specifically for adults with gorgeous nature scenes. 🧩Complete a puzzle. Get a huge puzzle, spread it out on the table or floor and have at it. Along with feelings of accomplishment, puzzles can spark feelings of nostalgia – reminding us of more carefree times. 😜Play games. Bananagrams, Sequence, Pictionary, Codenames, Monopoly, Catch Phrase will all likely promote laughter and togetherness. 🌺Garden. Spending time in the fresh air helps your body make melatonin, promoting a good night’s sleep. Restful sleep is key for lowering stress. Planting flowers, herbs or plants and watching them grow is also satisfying to see your hard work flourish. If you live in an apartment building, get some pots and get growing indoors. Merely playing in the dirt can promote feelings of happiness.

As a caregiver, it's important to know it's OK to accept support. You can’t do everything, and sometimes, you need a break. At Franciscan Village, we offer respite care where you can take advantage of all the benefits of assisted living and memory care options without the long-term commitment. We treat our guests with the same level of care and compassion as we do our residents. Call us (630-296-4748) to learn more about respite care at our community.

Franciscan Ministries November 13 at 7:29 AM · Today is World Kindness Day. Go out of your way to be kind to others.
🍁Fall Family Activities Safe from COVID-19 🍁 1. Help others — There are so many ways to help others. o Make cards for seniors or residents of our communities. o Clean out your bookcases and donate books to your library or other literacy organizations. o Organize your pantry and have each family member choose some canned food to donate to your local food pantry. Be sure to check that the expiration dates aren’t sometime soon. The opportunities for helping others are truly endless. Just be mindful that some organizations have updated policies to keep everyone safe during the pandemic. It is best to check first with the organization and find out the safest ways to help. 2. Plant tulips bulbs for the springtime — Everyone can help plant and take care of the tulip bulbs and fall is the perfect time of year to plant them in the ground. Then watch closely for them in early spring as the bulbs push their way from the ground and start to bud — always a thrill for little ones to see! 3. Game night marathon — Dedicate a night to playing board games! Put some hot chocolate on the stove, play some favorite tunes and you have a fun, easy, educational, cozy family night. 4. Create a fall family book club — Choose a book everyone in the family might enjoy and pick a date to discuss it. The book can be themed for the season to get you in the autumn spirit.
