During the racially contentious period in the late '60s, she became the first Black woman elected to Congress. She represented New York's 12th District from 1969 to 1983, and in 1972, she became the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. The Civil rights movement would not have been as successful as it was if not for people who worked tirelessly in support of the movement and for people who have sacrificed so much, like Ella Baker. At the height of the movement, Baker acted as the NAACP’s field secretary and branch director. Her roles in the campaign and the organization also often put her on the frontlines against the forces of oppression such as the Jim Crow Laws, which she fought by co-founding an organization that aimed to raise much need funds to fight those inhuman legislations. She was an ardent supporter of Dr. King and was an organizer for the preacher’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference. For all of the things mentioned above, her most influential contribution might be the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee - which focused on nonviolent protests, the organization of the 1961 freedom rides, and the registration of Black Voters. Ella baker’s legacy still lives on through The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights.

The legacy of Henrietta Lacks is a unique, historical, and medically significant one. At the age of 31, the Virginian born mother of five succumbed to cervical cancer at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951. A researcher took a sample of her cancer cells without consent. Though unethical, this act would have a fortuitous effect on medicine and medical research. Lacks’ cells had the peculiar ability to double every 20-24 hours, and this attribute has proved useful in furthering cancer and medical research throughout the years. The cells have been used in research into the human genome, viruses, radiation, and the like. Her “HeLa” cell line proved instrumental in the development of the polio vaccine, which has all but destroyed killed-off the virus. Her cells are the first Immortalized Cell Line in history.
You can watch her life in an Oprah Winfrey executive produced film “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”, adapted from Rebecca Skloot’s 2010 book of the same name.
