We are looking for a dependable person to help outside with the property and help customers. Must be 16 or over, able to lift 50# repeatedly and available 1:00-5:30. Plant knowledge is a plus but not required. This is a very physical and dirty job. Stop by the store and get an application.

I am so proud of my 2nd grade class! We are reading The Wild Robot and they built this robot scarecrow out of recycled water bottles. She will be on display at the Green Thumb Unlimited Scarecrow Festival in Vidor!

We had a couple special visitors today! Love our little Jane which is 2 months old today and a whole 8lbs 10 oz now and my SILove!
It is time for the information on rose pruning and late winter rose care.
Late winter (generally February) is the time to get your shrub rose maintenance completed.
Determine Soil pH.
Roses prefer a soil pH of 6.5. Apply dolomitic lime if you need to raise pH or ammonium sulfate if you need to lower pH. Follow soil test recommendations. Consider adding Epsom salt (magnesium source) or gypsum (calcium source) if a soil test warrants. Low to medium levels of magnesium warrants Epsom salt application. Apply gypsum if a soil test indicates a calcium deficiency. For ornamental plants you want 6-8 times more calcium in your soil than magnesium.
Sun Situation.
Examine the sun situation in all planting locations. Roses need 8 hours of direct sun daily. Sun from early morning til mid / late afternoon is preferred
.
Pruning.
Remove 1-2 of the older, larger canes when pruning. Plant height should be reduced by 2/3rds at this time of the year (generally late January to late February in the south as you move from the coast to north of Interstate 20). Shrub roses come into bloom 30-35 days after pruning while floribunda, grandiflora and hybrid tea roses take 40-45 days after pruning to begin a nice flower show (adjustments for weather conditions).
Mulching.
Refresh mulch with a new layer of pine straw, pine bark or similar material. A depth of 2-3 inches is preferred. Be sure to avoid excessive mulch in rose beds.
Fertilize.
A three-month, controlled-release fertilizer should be applied at the time of pruning or within a couple weeks after pruning.
Fungicide.
Apply a contact fungicide (such as mancozeb) to kill over-wintering fungal spores. Use a systemic fungicide a month later to lessen disease pressure from blackspot and Cercospora leaf spot as we move into spring.
