Phase 4 guidelines for funeral providers The family and staff at Friedrich-Jones and Overman-Jones funeral homes in Naperville and Plainfield are honoring loved ones with dignity and compassion during these challenging times. “There are a variety of options and approaches available to families,” says Stephanie Jones-Kastelic, co-owner and pre-planning consultant. “Phase 4 allows families a greater amount of attendees and flexibility in guest participation inside the funeral home. In addition, we are fortunate to have welcoming outdoor spaces at both of our facilities to further allow for additional guests to visit and memorialize together.” Phase 4 Guidelines are: • Hosting services at the funeral home with 50 or fewer people. • Guests are to maintain 6 feet of social distance and wear a mask. • Many churches are open and hosting funerals of 75 or more people. Restrictions vary by church. • Most cemeteries are hosting 35 or more at the graveside, with guest limitations in their chapels. Restrictions vary by cemetery. • Military Honors are available through all branches of service. • Holding services utilizing technology so family and friends can attend a service virtually. • Many restaurants and country clubs are open to host funeral luncheons, guest capacity will vary by restaurant. For more information on funerals and options available during Phase 4 restrictions, please contact Friedrich-Jones Naperville at 630-355-0213 or Plainfield at 815-436-9221 or visit www.friedrichjones.com.

Because the traditional Homeless Veterans Stand-down has been cancelled this year, we have been asked by the Department Commander to conduct programs in our community to help both veterans and others who have been impacted by the pandemic and may be suffering economic hardship. To do this, the Post is hosting a food drive that will benefit the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Wheaton and Loaves and Fishes in Naperville. Nonperishable food items and toiletries can be dropped off at the Post Canteen through November 19th. Donate Shoes for a Good Cause In addition to the food drive that was recently announced, the Post is also conducting a shoe drive to help benefit the homeless in the Chicago area in conjunction with North Side Housing and Supportive Services. This organization assists homeless individuals by providing housing and comprehensive services. New or gently used shoes for men, women, and/or children can be dropped off at the Post Canteen between now and November 20th. If you have questions about most needed items, please contact Mike McGrath at (630) 357-2680.

In 1994, the United States Congress, designated December 7 of each year as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. The joint resolution was signed by President Bill Clinton on August 23, 1994. On November 29, Clinton issued a proclamation declaring December 7, 1994, the first National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Desert Redleg: Artillery Warfare in the First Gulf War Wednesday, February 24th 7:00 PM CST Online via Zoom Free Event but Registration Required When Saddam Hussein’s Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, triggering the First Gulf War, a coalition of thirty-five countries led by the United States responded with Operation Desert Storm, which culminated in a one-hundred-hour coordinated air strike and ground assault that repelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait. But there is much more to that story. Though largely forgotten in descriptions of the war, an eight-day barrage of artillery fire made this seemingly rapid offensive possible. At the forefront of this offensive were the brave field artillerymen known as “redlegs” in support of the Big Red One’s initial assault on the Iraqi 26th Infantry Division and the onward attack by the division of Iraqi Republican Guards positions deeper inside Iraq and Kuwait.

Virtual Winter Seed Sowing for Beginners Virtual program offered online via Zoom Saturday, February 27th 10:00am-11:30am CST via Zoom Registration is required Do you ever wish you could start seeds for your garden without all the muss and fuss of trying to sustain them indoors during the winter? There is a way! And it’s pretty darn easy…join us on a Saturday morning and learn the techniques of winter sowing in miniature “greenhouses” made out of gallon milk/water jugs. Cantigny staff horticulturist, Liz Omura, and Ellen Meyer, Cantigny volunteer with many years of winter sowing under her belt, will explain and demonstrate the process. You’ll then be ready to start some mini greenhouses of your own. What do you need to get started? Hunt for translucent one-gallon milk or water jugs (rinsed out; caps not needed) — you can ask friends and neighbors to save a few for you or take a walk in your neighborhood on recycling day and grab a few from local recycle bins. Another good source of jugs would be a nearby coffee shop — they go through multiple jugs per day! Also, a hefty pair of scissors, soilless planting mix, twisty-tie material and plant tags and certainly seeds for those plants that sound interesting to you! https://cantigny.org/event/virtual-winter-seed-sowing-for-beginners/

Virtual Colloquium: Zeolite water purification at Tikal, an ancient Maya city in Guatemala Feb. 24, 2021, 4:00 pm US/Central ZOOM ONLY Zoom information coming soon Speaker: Kenneth Barnett Tankersley, University of Cincinnati http://events.fnal.gov/colloquium/ Location: ZOOM ONLY Evidence for the oldest known zeolite water purification filtration system occurs in the undisturbed sediments of the Corriental reservoir at the Maya city of Tikal, in northern Guatemala. The Corriental reservoir was an important source of drinking water at Tikal during the Late Preclassic to Late Classic cultural periods. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and six AMS radiocarbon ages show that between ~ 2185 and 965 cal yr B.P. the drinking water in the Corriental reservoir water was filtered through a mixture of zeolite and coarse, sand-sized crystalline quartz. Zeolite is a non-toxic, threedimensionally porous, crystalline, hydrated aluminosilicate with natural adsorbent and ion exchange properties, which removes harmful microbes as well as dispersed insoluble and soluble toxins from drinking water. The occurrence of zeolite in Corriental reservoir sediments expands our understanding of the earliest history of water purification and the long-term sustainability of an ancient Maya city.
