For those who haven't been in the clinic the past few weeks, we wanted to update you on the changes we've made to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:

D.D. Palmer performed the first chiropractic adjustment on September 18, 1895. He examined a janitor who had become deaf 17 years prior after he felt something “give” in his back. He examined the area and gave an “adjustment” to what was felt to be a misplaced vertebra in the upper back. The janitor then observed that his hearing improved.
Artificial light has been linked to a shift in visual acuity toward nearsightedness. It is also associated with decreased production of serotonin (one of our “feel-good” hormones, and an important hormone for regulation of circadian rhythms). Our bodies get much of our vitamin D through chemical reactions that take place on our skin. These reactions require sunlight. Artificial light does not serve this same function, and thus time indoors can lead to vitamin D deficiency—a problem plaguing more and more Americans today. Low vitamin D can lead to osteoporosis, depression, insomnia, immune compromise, and many other issues.
Mid to late morning sun is best for balancing vitamin D synthesis, boosting serotonin and avoiding overexposure. And yes, it’s hot outside, but if you exercise, you’re going to sweat anyway. So exercise outside! Then that jump into a creek or swimming hole somewhere after will feel that much better. You’ll see an increase in your mood, your sleep quality, physical agility and so many other aspects of your life.
Find something that changes your physiology, gets your blood moving, and activates your brain. With enough time you will function better. I guarantee that with consistent effort on your part to move regularly with intensity your body will demand that you eat cleaner and put less junk in it. Your thinking will be clearer, you’ll have more energy, and best yet have a better quality of life. You will like yourself more if you activate your brain daily. You will deal with stress of all kinds more efficiently. I think you get the point of what I’m telling you—MOVE with intensity.
Indoor air typically contains 2-5 times higher concentrations of common air pollutants, and excess time indoors has been associated with an increased risk for heart and lung disease, cancer, bronchitis, asthma, and allergies.
We wanted to share a little wisdom this Wednesday from the Founder of Chiropractic, Daniel David Palmer. It is wild to think that a discipline founded 125 years ago still contains so much insight and application for use today.
We wish you a happy, restful World Mental Health Day from Homewood Friends & Family!
Take it easy today, friends!
According to the American Psychological Association Americans are more stressed about the future of our country than ever, which comes as no surprise to anyone scrolling through social media.
For those looking for natural remedies to combat stress, ylang ylang can be a great holistic tool to add to your anti-stress kit. Make a massage oil with it, put it in a diffuser, or add it to your pulse points and breathe a big sigh of relief.
"Every woman who heals herself heals her children's children." --Leizel Graham
We could not agree more with Leizel. One of the core practices of Friends & Family Health Centers is our commitment to and joy in providing chiropractic care and nutritional consult for all the mommas out there.
Self care comes in so many different forms. One of our favorite methods of self care is to dream up delicious, nutrient-dense meals for the week ahead. It sets us up for a successful, healthy week and the act of prepping our food is a beautiful moving meditation for a Sunday afternoon.
Today is World Food Day!
With more than 14 million Americans experiencing food insecurity we hope to bring light and hope this issue and to support communities and causes working to ensure that all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to safe, nutritious food that meets their needs for an active and healthy life.
We are Archetype.
Friends and Family Health Centers has evolved into something wholly and holistically new.
Keep your eyes on our social channels for news about our brand launch in the coming weeks!
More specifically, let's talk active recovery.
On these late-autumn, grey days it's incredibly difficult to pull ourselves out of bed (or off the couch for those remote workers) and get outside.
But moving our bodies each day is absolutely integral to natural health.
No need to go hard on the kettlebells today- unless you feel fully recovered from all the turkey you had last week- but do get outside, get some oxygen, and get moving!
The second pillar in our Five Foundations of Health is our focus on spinal mobility.
The spine is responsible for protecting the spinal cord which sends and receives messages from the brain. The spine must be strong and flexible in order to detect something as vital and essential to life as these brain-to-body communications.
For optimal health we must make sure that the brain signals can reach the body (& vice versa) in the best possible way. This is where chiropractic care comes in. Spinal adjustments help restore proper function to the nervous system which helps the body heal naturally.
If you are looking for a partner to help you increase left-to-right brain communication, build mental acuity, and want to maintain your overall health in a natural way, now is the time to book your eval with Archetype.
We are so excited to introduce Archetype's ambassador program, Type A. Send us a message for more information about how you can join this movement culture.
Are you Type A?
The first mission in our five core foundations of health is to Maximize Brain Health and Function, building mental acuity regardless of your age.
Your brain is the command center, the keeper of memory, the processor of data. It senses, understands, refines, and decides. Our brains are amazing and mysterious. Keeping your brain healthy is the ultimate goal.
The best way to improve brain health is to give it mental stimulation. The brain is always growing, adapting, and rewiring by growing new neurons. As we age, it’s common to experience loss of memory or fine-motor skills. Most age-related memory and motor-skill loss are from lack of brain exercise. Just like any other organ, you have to exercise it to gain knowledge.
Your health is dependent on strength. Strength of the body makes you exponentially resilient. At Archetype we will teach you what you need to be strong for your lifetime. It doesn’t matter your skill level, if you want to learn we are here to teach you the basics through advanced movements. Start now and begin your journey to learning how stay healthy for a lifetime. #naturalhealth #functionaltraining #functionalfitness #birminghamalabama #birminghamfitness #birminghamdoctors
