He was encouraged to enter a singing contest after impressing his schoolteacher with a rendition of Red Foley's country song "Old Shep." The ten-year-old Presley was dressed as a cowboy; he stood on a chair to reach the microphone and sang "Old Shep". He recalled placing fifth.

October 18th through the 24th is National Teen Driver Safety Week. While we should all be safe drivers, this week - and every week, parents should have conversations with their teens about the important rules they need to follow to stay safe behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. These rules address the greatest dangers for teen drivers: alcohol, inconsistent or no seat belt use, distracted and drowsy driving, speeding, and number of passengers. Stay Safe!

His death launched an increased focus on racing safety that has saved the lives of countless drivers since. One safety device developed in the wake of his death specific to racing is the Hans Device, a collar that stabilizes a driver's head upon impact. Over the years, there have been many safety devices that became standard equipment on production vehicles that were first introduced at the race track. A few of them include seat belts, disk brakes, better tires, and crumple zones.
