As urban habitats continue to merge upon rural areas, there has been an increase in deer-car collisions. There are over half a million incidents a year, with a significant number of fatalities. Experts say it's usually best to brake firm and stay in your lane if you encounter a deer while driving down the road.
Here are some interesting facts that you may not know: Supermarket apples can be a year old. 🍎 Sloths can hold their breath longer than dolphins can. 🐬 It’s impossible to hum while holding your nose. 👃 And property insurance policies don't automatically include flood insurance. 💦 Since floods ARE the most common and costly natural disaster AND 20% of the time, they occur in low-risk areas; we thought you would like to know! The good news is that there's a separate flood policy available, and we can help you put it in place! Are you ready to talk about it?

1234 accounts for 10.7% of all pins, followed by 1111 and 0000. Studies show that these three combinations together account for 18.6% of pins. Wow! 😳 Perhaps it's time to create a PIN that's a bit more unique...
Here's a common question.❓ "If someone hits my vehicle while it is parked, what can I do to protect myself?" 🚗 Hopefully, the person responsible left a note. Or there are security cameras 🎥 or witnesses 👀 of the incident. But if you can't locate the person who caused the damage, it's your auto policy's collision coverage, which will likely cover the loss. A deductible would apply here. And, collision coverage is optional, so if you chose not to buy it, you would have to pay for repairs out of pocket. Uninsured motorist property damage coverage could also pay for damage caused by hit-and-run drivers in states where this type of coverage is available. If your insurer locates the responsible party for the damage and recovers some or all of the repair costs, you may get a refund of your collision deductible. Side note: Only 12 percent of all reported hit-and-runs (2016 statistics) were solved, so ensuring you have the coverage to protect yourself makes sense.
🐶 Sure, dogs are considered by many as man's best friend, but that doesn't necessarily include the mailman.📫 In one incident, when a dog bit the mailman, causing an injury...👮 It was a renters insurance policy that paid out for his medical bills. It's sometimes easy for people to think that they don't have enough "stuff" to justify carrying a renters policy. Yet, it can protect you from more than you might realize.

Over the years, you may have heard the term “10 and 2 driving”. 🚙 This is regarding the position in which you should hold your hands on the steering wheel. This is typically described in terms of how your hands' placement relates to the numbers on a clock. ⏰ But, the technique for proper hand placement on the steering wheel has changed over the years. NHTSA now recommends the placement known as “9 and 3”. The 10 and 2 o’clock position is no longer recommended because it can be dangerous in vehicles with smaller steering wheels equipped with airbags.

Except for Arizona and Hawaii, the end of daylight-saving time for 2020 will be this Sunday at 2 a.m. Americans will push their clocks back and rejoice that they gain an hour of sleep. 💤 Well, maybe not this year. While Halloween might seem a little different this year, it will feature a spooky spectacle of skywatching with a rare second-in-the-month full moon, known as a blue moon. 🌕 This 2020 Halloween full moon will also be visible to the entire world for the first time since 1944. 👀 Even cooler, right? But, if you miss it, you'll have to wait until 2039 to see another global full moon. 🌐 Here's wishing you and yours a safe Halloween! 🎃
A skimmer is a card reader that is disguised to look like part of an ATM. When you unknowingly slide your card into an ATM with a skimmer attached, it scans and stores all your information from the magnetic strip and captures your PIN from the keypad. 💳 The collected card data can be used to create a duplicate card which can then be used to make ATM cash withdrawals. This is how a thief's ATM scanner can look. 💡Experts advise pulling on every ATM and gas station scanner you use. If the device comes off in your hands, you'll be glad you tested it!
Are you going to rent a moving truck? 🚛 Typically, credit cards and most personal insurance policies do not cover damage to rental moving trucks, even if they cover damage to rental cars. That's why it's a good idea to purchase a damage waiver from the company who rents you the moving truck. If you damage it, you'll be charged not only for the repair costs but also for the loss of income while the truck is out of service. 😟
Keep in mind that insurance companies do NOT insure land. Yet, some lenders require it. 😳 Ask a lender if they will require you to insure the land that your home sits on before you start your loan approval process.

Communicate safety to your teen driver. Make sure they know that it takes thousands of bolts to build a car...but only one nut to destroy it. 💥 There is a reason why in driver’s training they don’t teach you how to text while driving or how to steer with your knee. Make sure they know that. Safety is a cheap and effective insurance policy, but, it can’t be the only one. While it may be tempting to reduce coverage limits when adding a teen driver to your auto policy to offset the costs, it's not a good idea.

To get boat insurance, you need to own a boat... or car insurance, you need to own a car... or exotic snake insurance, you need to own an exotic snake. But, when you own a rental home...you can’t get homeowners insurance. What’s up with that? If you plan to rent out your entire home to tenants, you'll need landlord insurance to insure the property... And your tenants will be responsible for insuring their own belongings. If you’re so inclined, you could post a sign in your home that says “Not Responsible for Lost or Stolen Items.” Your friends and family will think you’re crazy, but you could do that. Either way, you should have the right policy in place.

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and fell. She assured everyone that she was okay. While she appeared to be a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening, but she had actually suffered a stroke. Had bystanders known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be alive today. Neurologists say that if they can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours, they can reverse the effects of a stroke. The trick is getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and treated within 3 hours. If even one of these tasks is a challenge, seek emergency medical attention. Here are the things to look for...

As we head into the holiday season, here's a reminder of what foods dogs can and can't eat... ✅ Apples, bananas, blueberries, carrots, cheese, chicken, eggs, green beans, honey, kiwi, mango, oatmeal, peaches, peanut butter, pears, pineapple, cooked potatoes, pumpkin, rice, sweet potato, and yogurt 🚫 Alcohol, avocado, caffeine, chocolate, coffee, fat trimmings, garlic, gum, grapes, macadamia, milk, mushrooms, onions, pits and seeds, potato skins, raw potato, raisins, rhubarb, salty foods, tea, walnuts, and yeast dough Taking the time to study this info can certainly save you some grief!
When Jeff and his friend Dave broke out the brushes, wood stain, and rags to stain Dave's porch, they noticed that their can of oil-based stain included a warning saying that stain-soaked rags could spontaneously catch fire if discarded improperly. 😂 “We chuckled and remarked. How often does spontaneous combustion occur?” Jeff recalls. But, while their project was drying, and no one was nearby, a tiny fire started right by the porch. 🔥 It was just two hours after they had tossed the soaked rags into a pile next to their supplies. When returning from lunch, they discovered the fire. Luckily, it was small enough that they put it out with a garden hose. 💦 “We were grateful that we didn't burn the entire house down,” Jeff recalls. So what happened? 💥 Rags that are wet with oil-based products can spontaneously heat up, which can cause a fire. What's the safest way to dispose of stain-soaked rags? 🚫 Do not put rags in the trash while they are still wet. ✅ Let them dry before you throw them away.
While poinsettia, mistletoe, and holly are all associated with the holiday season, they are also poisonous to cats and dogs. 🐾 They can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and even death. Be sure to keep them out of reach!
A holiday grief-saving tip... If you have a live tree, make sure the water reservoir inside of the tree stand is not accessible to dogs and cats.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause sudden illness and even death. If you inhale CO, it rapidly bonds with hemoglobin, displacing oxygen. It is known as the "Invisible Killer" since it is an odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas. 💨 How can you avoid it? 🔘 Never use a generator inside your home, basement, or garage or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. 🔘 Never use your outdoor grill inside, even inside of your garage. Charcoal and gas grills create large amounts of carbon monoxide. 🔘 Install CO detectors. If this post even saves one person, it's worth it!
Since it's that time of year, do you think you'll be acquiring any high-value items this holiday season? If so, it could mean that additional coverage will need to be added to your property insurance policy so that you have the coverage you expect in the event of certain claims. Standard property policies will insure your jewelry, for example, but only up to certain limits. If the value of an item exceeds the stated limit on your property policy, then there is no coverage for the difference unless you've purchased a “scheduled personal property” endorsement or a floater. This also applies to electronics, antiques, art, high-value rugs, firearms, and other items. Is this a concern?

According to a recently published study by the Automobile Association of America (AAA) Foundation for Traffic Safety... ⭕️ Approximately 50,000 crashes in the U.S. annually involve road debris. ⭕️ This results in nearly 10,000 injuries and 125 deaths per year. ⭕️ 37% of these fatalities result from the driver swerving to avoid hitting an object. ⭕️ 66% of debris-related crashes result from items falling from an unsecured load. ⚠️ In February of 2004, a young woman was critically injured when an entertainment center fell from a vehicle in front of her. ⚠️ In January of 2006, a man was killed, and a 5-year-old boy critically injured after a tow truck crashed into their vehicle while swerving to avoid a tarp. ⚠️ In June of 2016, a motorcyclist was injured after colliding into a foam pad after it flew off of a towed boat. Let's all do our part to make our roads safer.
🔥Because fire creates poisonous gases that will make you feel tired and disoriented, it's the smoke and toxic gases that kill more people than the actual flames. Working smoke alarms increase your chances of surviving a home fire. So what can you do? ❇️ Install dual-sensor smoke alarms, which contain both photoelectric and ionization smoke sensors. ❇️ Never disable your smoke alarms while cooking. Doing so can be a deadly mistake. ❇️ Test smoke alarm batteries monthly and replace them once a year. ❇️ Install smoke alarms on all levels of your home, both inside and outside of sleeping areas. ❇️ Replace smoke alarms every 8-10 years or according to the manufacturer's instructions. Taking these simple precautions can make all the difference.

They say diamonds are a girl's best friend. But when they go missing, that's the worst time to find out that you didn't have the necessary coverage on your property policy to cover them. 💔 And when you think about it, any jewelry worn every day, such as a wedding ring, will be more susceptible to a loss. By adding a rider or scheduling your jewelry, in most cases, you can expand coverage limits and extend protection to help cover additional risks. Have you been putting this off? 😳 Let's talk about it! 📞

📦If you've had a package stolen that you've ordered online, you're not alone. Here are a few things that you can do about it: ✳️ Check your bushes, garage, or other places where drivers may have left them. ✳️ Check with your neighbors. ✳️ View any home security footage you have. ✳️ Ask the seller of your item about their policy on stolen packages. ✳️ Contact your credit card company. Many offer purchase protection if you've used their card for your purchase. Here are some steps you can take to prevent theft: ✳️ Accept deliveries in person. ✳️ Send packages to an alternative location such as an Amazon locker. ✳️ Pick up your packages directly at your UPS or FedEx location. ✳️ Use a video doorbell to alert you when someone approaches your door, so you'll know you have a package. ✳️ If the item you've ordered is expensive, insure it through the retailer or the delivery service. Use these tips to reduce your risk. If you have questions about how your homeowners or renters policy can be helpful in a situation like this, let's talk.

🏡 Smoke alarms in your home help play an important role in keeping you and your family safe. However, they are of no use if they do not have working batteries. 🔋 Experts suggest checking your alarms at least once a month to make sure they are working properly. ✅ Batteries should be replaced every 6 months, and the alarm itself should be replaced once every 10 years.
When a button battery is swallowed, the saliva triggers an electrical current. This creates a chemical reaction that can severely burn the esophagus within a couple of hours. The disturbing part is that it might not be so obvious at first that there is an issue. Instead, it may seem like a child has a cold or flu. Repairing the damage caused by button battery ingestion is painful and can involve multiple surgeries. It's a good reason to keep loose batteries locked away and to place a piece of duct tape over remote controls and toys to create a more secure battery compartment. Here's to keeping our children safe! 💛

Let's face it. Our lives depend a lot on electricity. 🔌 So it's common to rely on power strips to turn one plug into several. Here are five things to keep in mind when using power strips that can save you a ton of grief: ✳️ Never leave power strips in reach of little ones. Don't assume they should know better. ✳️ Don't plug one power strip into another. It can cause the strips to fail and even catch fire. ✳️ Never use power strips that are rated for indoor use outdoors. They are not made to stand up to water and weather. ✳️ Never place a powerstrip underneath a rug. If you do, it can be a fire hazard. ✳️ Never plug your sump pump into a power strip. Instead, use a GFCI outlet that is above floor level. Take the time to look at the power strips in your home to ensure you are using them safely! 🏠

🐶 For many of us, dogs ARE an insurance policy. However, once a dog has bitten someone, it poses an increased risk. In such a case, an insurance company may charge a higher premium or exclude the dog from coverage altogether. The average dog bite claim is $30,000. If a claim exceeds the limit on a property policy, the dog owner is personally responsible for all damages above that amount, including legal expenses. To reduce the chances of dog biting, experts suggest following these steps: 🔘 Spend time with a dog before buying or adopting it. 🔘 Use caution when bringing a dog into a home with an infant or toddler. 🔘 Be sensitive to cues that a child is fearful or apprehensive about a dog. 🔘 Have your dog spayed or neutered. 🔘 Socialize your dog so that it knows how to act with other people and animals. Do you have questions about coverage for your specific breed? Let's talk about it. 📞
Most of us have that one drawer in our homes, the junk drawer. It serves as a place to store random items. 🔑🔦🔓📌📎✏️ So what's the one thing you should avoid throwing into the junk drawer? Loose and exposed, 9-volt batteries. 🔋 Why? Because loose metal objects in the junk drawer can short out a 9-volt battery and ignite a fire. 🔥 If you do have them, it’s best to keep batteries inside of their package or keep the posts covered up with tape. It's just a simple precaution you can take to save yourself from unnecessary grief. ✅
In many instances, the cost to rebuild a home is more than its market value. 🏠 Yet, after the 📉 housing market correction of 2008, 25 percent of people polled by the Insurance Information Network thought they should lower their home insurance coverage because market values had gone down. This thinking can result in a homeowner having insufficient coverage if they need to rebuild after enduring a total loss. 😳 Typically, lenders only require that you have enough insurance to protect the balance of what they have loaned you. Yet, homeowners need to have enough coverage to rebuild their home and to replace their possessions. At least once a year, take the time to go over your property policy with your insurance agent. 📅

🔎 Did you know that not every date on food packaging is an expiration date? According to the USADA, here are some common food label dates you might come across and what they actually mean: 🔵 Best if used by date - Best date for flavor and quality 🔵 Use-by date - The last date that a product is at its highest quality 🔵 Sell-by date - How long the store can display the product 🔵 Closed by date - Indicates time and day the product was packaged Use these dates as a guideline along with good old common sense. But if in doubt, throw it out!
Social host liability laws vary widely from state to state, but 43 states have them on the books. Most of these laws also offer an injured person, such as the victim of a drunk driver, a method to sue the person who served the alcohol. If you are hosting even a small Super Bowl party, here are some quick tips: ❇️ Encourage guests to pick a designated driver. ❇️ Limit your alcohol intake so that you will be better able to assess your guests’ sobriety. ❇️ Offer non-alcoholic beverages and serve food. ❇️ Stop serving liquor toward the end of the party. Switch to coffee, tea, and soft drinks. ❇️ If guests seem unable to drive, arrange a ride for them. ❇️ Give an intoxicated guest an all-expense paid night in your guest room or on your couch. Whether you are cheering for the Chiefs or the Buccaneers, start with a game plan that minimizes your liability risks. 🏈

While floods are best-known for causing extensive water damage to homes and businesses, sewage from sanitary sewer lines can back up water through drain pipes. So what are the most common causes of water backup? 🔎 It's the blockages that can occur when tree roots seek moisture. 🌳 Or when a city sanitary main gets clogged. Property insurance policies do not generally cover water backup unless additional water backup coverage is added to your property policy before the incident. While this isn't the most exciting thing to think about, we want to make sure you have the coverage you'll want in the event of a claim. Let's talk about it.

Have you ever wondered if the food in your freezer thawed out during a power outage while you were away? Here's how to know for sure. Place a cup of water in your freezer. 🍵 Freeze it solid. Then, put a quarter on top of it and leave it inside of your freezer. If your food has thawed out and then refroze, the quarter will have fallen to the bottom or midpoint of the cup. Thanks to this straightforward trick, you'll know if your food is still safe to eat. 🍕

🚗 As your teenager gets their driver's license, that's when they must be added to your auto insurance policy. It's no secret that insurance rates are higher for teens. That's because statistically, they do have more accidents. So how can you insure your teen driver to get the coverage they need without breaking the bank? 🔵 Consider increasing your deductibles. 🔵 See if your teen's grades qualify for a Good Student Discount. 🔵 Consider letting them drive a used vehicle instead of a brand new one. 🔵 Be a good example of a safe driver. 🔵 Somehow, convince them that the legal driving age has been increased to 25. (smile) As they say, safety is a cheap and effective insurance policy, but of course, it can’t be the only one. If you want to talk about insuring your teen or anything else, we will be standing by.

For those of you who like the idea of houseplants, but you've decided that your house is where plants come to die, here are 3 houseplants that need little water or effort: 🌱 Aloe plants only need to be watered once a week in summer and once a month in the winter. 🍃 Sansevieria Trifasciata keeps water in its leaves. The dirt this plant sits in should be completely dry before watering. 🌿 During the spring and summer months, water Epipremnum once every four or five days using room temperature water. In the winter months, give it a weekly shower. Say "hello" to easygoing plants and claim your green thumb! 👍
