The late painter, Clyde Singer (1999) was born on this day back in 1908 in Malvern, Ohio. He studied at the Columbus Art School until he won a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York City. His breakthrough show was in 1935 at the National Academy of Design and the Whitney Museum of American Art. From 1940-1999 Clyde was a curator and assistant director of The Butler, where he also taught art classes. he also became an art critic and columnist for the Vindicator. In his lifetime, he painted more than 3,000 works of art, mostly oils, specializing in everyday urban life set mostly in New York City and Youngstown. He participated in at least 500 shows, was awarded over 40 prizes, and had more than 50 one-man exhibitions. "Clyde Singer's World", a selection of most beloved paintings from The But;er's Singer Collection are on view now through January 3, 2021.

It’s taken me seven years to finish this painting. Brad sat for me twice in 2013. He had long hair for the first sitting, just after wrapping ‘Twelve Years a Slave’. The second took place while he was filming ‘Fury’. His hair was short - he was playing a WW2 tank commander. The first portrait hangs in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC. Although it’s never left my studio, this new one has been on a longer, more complicated journey. Seven years later, it’s now time for me to leave it alone.

Garo began studying lithography while still in high school, then pursued formal art training at the Herron School of Art and Design, where he received his BFA in 1948. In addition, he studied #printmaking at the Art Students’ League under Will Barnet and at Atelier 17 with Stanley William Hayter in the late 1940s in New York.
Antreasian’s exhibition history spans more than 50 years. His paintings, drawings, and master prints are housed in over 60 museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe. The founding Technical Director of the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Antreasian has also been a revered professor at the Herron School of Art and the University of New Mexico.
GaroAntreasian passed away at the age of 96 years on November 3, 2018.
