Like any nurse at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Garden City Hospital RN, Sarah, prepared for the fight of her life in caring for her patients with this new disease. What she didn’t know, was that she’d be fighting on their side. After 185 days spent at Garden City Hospital, in various units, Sarah has emerged from her fight as victorious. Today, we celebrate as Sarah goes home to continue her road to recovery with her loved ones. We’re proud of Sarah for her persistence and will, and also the many incredible physicians and staff who cared for her along the way and never gave up. We wish Sarah and her loved ones the best as they continue this journey!

Talk to your doctor today about scheduling your mammogram at Garden City Hospital. Call 734-458-4366 to schedule your appointment. MAMMOGRAM MONDAYS! Checking phones at the dinner table can be difficult to resist but doing so can divert you away from spending valuable time with loved ones and can distract your eating; which can lead to health issues like obesity. To cut temptation of phones at the dinner table, get the family involved in cutting screen time at the table together, or create a “no-phone zone” in the kitchen where everyone can place their phones before dinner. How do you cut screen time at the dinner table? Share at www.gch.org/passport-to-good-health or in the comments below. #HealthyCity City of Westland - Administration

Look left, now right. Chances are the people next to you will need blood someday. In fact, there is a 97% chance someone you know will need blood in their lifetime. Stop by Garden City Hospital tomorrow between 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, in the lower-level classrooms in our Medical Office Building, to donate blood. Thank you. #GiveBloodShareLife
As the days get shorter, it may be difficult to stick to your regular workout after work. Set your alarm for a little earlier than usual and try to start your day with a workout. Try some morning yoga or, if it’s light enough, take a brisk walk or run and enjoy the cool breeze. Exercising in the morning will give you more energy throughout the day and is a great way to cut down your morning screen time. www.gch.org/passport-to-good-health. #HealthyCity City of Westland - Administration

Give someone the pick-me-up they didn’t expect. If you’re out, whether it’s getting gas, going to the grocery store or going to work, write an encouraging message on a sticky note for a stranger and post it somewhere where someone will see it. Your small gesture may be enough to make someone’s day. www.gch.org/passport-to-good-health #HealthyCity

Take today to show appreciation by offering to help someone in need with these tasks to make their day a little easier. www.gch.org/passport-to-good-health #HealthyCity

Today we celebrate our women in medicine with National #womenphysicianday. Elizabeth Blackwell was the first female to earn a medical degree in the U.S. in 1849. Since then, more and more women have entered the healthcare field, making up a little more than 1/3 of the physician profession. Garden City Hospital recognizes all women in medicine who work tirelessly for patients of our communities each day, and especially now during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like to recognize a GCH doctor? List their name in the comments below.
Heart disease remains the #1 killer in the U.S. for both men and women. Think you might be at risk? Take our FREE heart risk assessment https://ha.healthawareservices.com/ra/survey/4885. Discuss your results with your doctor.
Considering so many of us are working and schooling from home, eyestrain and blue light exposure is a serious health concern during this pandemic! Here at GCH, we'd like to offer some quick tips for minimizing eyestrain for our community. First and foremost, blink often and close your eyes periodically. Try to refocus on an object far away from your monitor and roll your eyeballs up, down, right, left when you begin feeling eye fatigue. Try to follow the rule of 20-20-20 if possible! (Take a 20 second break, every 20 minutes, to look away from your computer screen and refocus on an object 20 feet away.) This helps to relax your eye muscles! Try to stay focused as well as healthy!
Prime Healthcare's Ergonomic Specialist has some tips for staying active in a sedentary job! With many of us working from home during quarantine, it's still important to be active in little ways to further general wellness. • Cycle or walk to work! If you're situated rather close to your place of work, the extra effort of biking to clock in could benefit your health greatly! • Take the stairs when possible, and avoid the immediate convenience of elevators in lieu of furthering your health. • Park your car at a distance in the parking lot to add a couple hundred extra steps into each day. A few hundred steps is nothing, but over time this exercise will compound towards your overall wellbeing. • Walk or stand while talking on phone instead of sitting. • Move your printer to an area that requires you to stand up and walk to get the papers. • Alter your tasks, consider light activity to break up continuous computer time. From keying to typing, checking emails, or reading reports, time spent on the computer can be both stimulating as well as monotonous. Consider light activities to stimulate your body as well as your mind! • When possible, stand during meetings. With many of us meeting virtually, this is an excellent opportunity to develop your own healthy meeting strategy! • Set an alarm to remind you to take a quick activity break or use free apps that help as remind to take microbreaks, eye breaks and ergonomic stretch breaks. Don't wear yourself down! • Drink plenty of water and be sure to stay hydrated. Try to avoid caffeinated drinks, tempting as they may be, they'll make you lethargic in the long run. • Develop a habit of doing 5-10 squats/ heel raises while on bathroom break or washing your hands. 20 second is all it takes to do light exercises like this anywhere! • Take an active lunch break - for instance, walk to somewhere you'd ideally eat and reset during your work day! • Eat healthy food to keep your mind and body active despite sedentary work. Fruits and vegetables included! • Quality sleep is very essential for normal daytime functioning. Avoid use of electronic devices such as smart phones, TV's, and computers before bedtime as it may affect the quality of your sleep. Try to establish a relaxing bed time routine like reading a book, listening relaxing music, or meditation. Sleep well - you deserve it! • Last but not the least - maintain good posture during activities even when sitting. While seemingly trivial, this benefits your overall wellbeing and makes a meaningful difference.
