Yesterday was a day full of smiles! As we continued celebrating Assisted Living Week and Grandparent’s Day – we had a Senior Photo Shoot. Our Life Enrichment Coordinator, Kari, tested her photography skills. The residents certainly made it easy, as we had a lot of joking around and fun while we took the photos. Residents who wanted their picture taken got to enjoy a beautiful day outside in the gardens and courtyard as well. All residents will be receiving a copy of their photo(s). Family, if you would like a copy emailed to you, please reach out to Kari at: enrichlife@garnettplace.net. We’d be happy to send you the original photo (for better quality) and any photo releases necessary so you can print copies for your loved ones. *All requests for photos will be confirmed with the resident prior to emailing.
Assisted Living week is so much fun. We love taking care of our residents, so this year's theme of "Caring is EssentiAL" is perfect. We celebrated today with giving our residents hand massages. We made sure everyone felt pampered by the end of the day.
We are continuing to celebrate Assisted Living Week with the theme “Caring is EssentiAL”– we hosted a tea party. We brought out the fancy china and sweet treats. Residents enjoyed the option of having a scone or cookies with their choice of tea. The apple cinnamon tea was a favorite, I think we’re all getting ready for fall here. Everyone enjoyed getting together to celebrate.
This week kicks off Assisted Living Week! We celebrate all of those who live in Assisted Living or who take care of our Assisted Living residents. This year's theme is "Caring is EssentiAL". All of our special activities this week are centered around self-care activities. Residents kicked of the week with a grandparents day celebration, enjoying a fun treat. We even had a few residents show off our Grandparent's Day sign, including one special grand-puppy! Happy Grandparent's Day to all of the grandparents and great-grandparents out there. We look forward to celebrating more with all of you.
We would like to welcome our new fall intern, Taylor! Here's an introduction form her so everyone can get to know her better:
I am from a small town right outside of Milwaukee called New Berlin. I am in the Therapeutic Recreation Program at the University of Iowa. I chose Iowa because I grew up a huge Hawkeye fan and was interested in the programs that were offered. I fell in love with Therapeutic Recreation immediately, because I love the diverse populations that we have the opportunity to work with.
In my free time, I enjoy going for walks with my dog and making furniture with my fiancé. I selected Garnett Place for my ideal internship, as the team-oriented atmosphere allows for exceptional care to the residents. I plan to learn more about the widely diverse programming that older adults enjoy, as I aim to continue my career with a similar population. When my internship is completed, I hope to find a job in the area, as my fiancé and I finalize our wedding details.
I am so excited for the opportunity to be Garnett Place’s Fall 2020 intern!
We are so blessed to have such an amazing family at Garnett Place. What a heartwarming way to honor Delmer's life ❤️
Mercy Cedar Rapids

Delmer Berstler, 98, passed away peacefully at Mercy on Aug. 25, with his wife of 73 years, Luella, by his side.
Shortly after Delmer passed, the family heard the Mercy lullaby (a tradition to mark the arrival of a new baby) played on the overheard speakers. Delmer’s daughter, Julie, said the family found comfort in knowing that another life was coming into the world just as her father had passed.
As it turned out, a baby girl named Harper had just been born. Julie said their family decided they wanted to donate one of Luella’s handmade quilts to the baby’s family in Delmer’s memory, as Delmer had always loved children.
With the permission of both families, Mercy staff members were happy to help them connect and, yesterday, Delmer’s daughter, Julie, met Harper and her parents, Brent and Andrea, outside of Mercy to give them Luella’s handmade quilt and other baby items. Julie said that Luella, who now lives in an assisted living center, was quite pleased to have one of her quilts go to Harper!
90th birthdays are big news, and something worth celebrating. Elizabeth's family decided to treat her and everyone at Garnett. They delivered a birthday cake, and the balloons and flowers lit up the dining room during lunch. Everyone sang happy birthday. The residents put together a card and got everyone to sign it. Happy birthday Elizabeth!
Garnett Place Family,
With the change in weather, we are entering a new phase of our protocol that will allow for indoor visits of loved ones. In an effort to continue to make Garnett Place a safe space for all residents and employees, testing or proof of testing will be strongly encouraged before visits.
Visits must be scheduled and in a designated area to limit cross contamination, allow for disinfection between visits and ensure each resident has equal opportunity to meet with loved ones.
As a reminder, despite our best efforts visits may need to be suspended or delayed based on the county positivity rate and any active cases of COVID-19 within the Community. Whether you choose to test or not, personal protective equipment is still mandatory during a visit and a pre-visit symptom screen and questionnaire will be conducted.
Garnett Place appreciates your understanding as we continue to navigate the best courses of action during this pandemic. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions and we look forward to many happy reunions in the weeks and months to come.
We have some pretty big work anniversaries to celebrate this week! Lee, our Health Care Coordinator, is celebrating his 12th year at Garnett Place. Kari, our Life Enrichment Coordinator, celebrates her 5th year here. We're lucky to have such caring team members taking care of our residents. Give a big congratulations to Lee and Kari. We are happy they are part of the Garnett Family.
Happy Halloween from all your family and friends at Garnett Place. We hope you have a fun and safe Halloween.

Garnett Place would like to recognize our veterans today. Thank you to those who served our country, and to their families for their support. We were honored to recognize our veterans today. If there is a veteran you would like to recognize, please leave their name in the comments below.
Garnett Place friends & family,
At this time the COVID-19 positivity rate in Linn County is over 10%, meaning we are no longer able to hold indoor visits. All visits from now until further notice will be window visits, unless the weather is nice enough to meet outside. For window visits, we still request that you call ahead to schedule your visits as we can only accommodate one family at a time. Garnett Place will provide a cell phone for your loved one to use if they do not have one of their own.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Last week we celebrated the end of Taylor’s internship in the Life Enrichment Department. Taylor has been studying Therapeutic Recreation at the University of Iowa. Her internship was the last step in completing her degree. We are so happy Taylor spent the last of her university education here with the Garnett Family. Taylor really made this place feel like home. We’re going to miss her energy and special pizazz she brought to our residents and programs. Taylor only gets a week off before beginning her new career in working with those who have disabilities. We know her hard work and positive attitude are going to take her far in this world. Taylor, we are all so proud of you. Thank you for being part of the Garnett Family. Wishing you the best and happy graduation!
Happy Thanksgiving from all of your family and friends at Garnett Place.
