THREE-VEHICLE COLLISION NEAR WICKENBURG CLAIMS THE LIVES OF TWO CHILDREN
In the early hours of October 3, tragedy struck a family of seven as they were traveling northwest on the US 93, just 24 miles outside of Wickenburg. At about 5:19 a.m., a pickup truck traveling in the south bound lane crossed the centerline and struck the front axle of a semi-trailer before crashing into the left side of the family’s van. Two small children were pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining family members were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, while the driver of the pickup truck was airlifted to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officers suspect that intoxication may have played a role in the collison.
While the sparsely populated area outside of Wickenburg may seem likely an unlikely place for a car crash, quite the opposite is true. As detailed by Jamie Warren in an abc 15 article in 2018, US 93 was ranked as the most dangerous highway in the United States by consumer website Value Penguin based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (NHTSA-FARS). The 200-mile-long stretch of road between Wickenburgen and the Hoover Dam is frequented by Arizonans traveling to Las Vegas, and was the site of 70 deadly collisions resulting in 90 fatalities from 2010-2016. Further, US 93 was ranked the fourth worst highway for emergency medical service wait times.
A more recent article by 12 News from July this year illuminates that the dangers of Arizona roadways persist. The article explains that based on the study by a national transportation research nonprofit group, Arizona interstate highways had the highest number of deaths in 2018. Additionally, deaths on Arizona interstate highways was twice the national average.
The tragic October 3 collision serves as a somber and exceedingly unfortunate reminder of the danger that we and our loved ones routinely encounter on the roadways. At Garrison Law Firm, our condolences go out to the family and we are deeply sorry for the loss of their children. For over the past 30 years, Attorney Kevin Garrison has sought justice for car collision victims and their families. Mr. Garrison has handled many serious crashes on U.S. 93. DRUNK DRIVING COLLISION KILLS TWO PEOPLE, WHILE A THIRD IS INJURED IN A SUBSEQUENT CRASH
https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix-traffic/2020/12/02/2-dead-1-seriously-injured-phoenix-crash-pushed-car-into-wall/3792556001/
Two people were killed and a third was injured in a series of car collisions that took place around 8:30 p.m. on December 1, 2020. Lex Christopher Currie was traveling northbound on 32nd Street near Cortez. According to police, his blood alcohol level was nearing four times the legal limit and his speed approached 100 miles per hour. Currie first crashed his Silver Toyota Camry into the back of Nissa Maxima before subsequently colliding with a blue Chevrolet Cruze. An unidentified fourth vehicle was involved but did not remain at the scene. The initial collision forced the Nissa Maxima from the roadway where it then crashed into a tree, thus killing its occupants Kimberly Sorg and Michelle Kardis. The driver of the Chevrolet Cruze suffered minor injuries. Currie was arrested and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on December, 11 at Maricopa Superior Court.
While the holidays are an otherwise joyous time, they present a particular danger to those on the roadways. Namely, large celebrations and family gatherings where alcohol is served are common, which increases the instances of drunk driving. Bars and restaurants that serve alcohol, otherwise known as dram shops, can be liable for the injuries caused by drunk patrons that get behind the wheel. Dram shop liability exists in Arizona when a restaurant or bar: (1) sells alcohol to an obviously intoxicated individual; (2) the individual consumes the alcohol that he/she purchased; and (3) the alcohol consumption was the foreseeable cause of injury or property damage. Therefore, one should always be prudent whether one is serving or consuming alcoholic beverages.
Garrison Law Firm mourns the loss of Sorg and Kardis, and our condolences go out to their family and loved ones. Garrison Law Firm also strongly advises that anyone serving or consuming alcohol this holiday season use their best judgment to avoid putting others at risk. For over the past 30 years, Attorney Kevin Garrison has sought justice for personal injury victims and their families, including suing drunk drivers and those that are responsible for overserving them. ARIZONA’S NEW HANDS-FREE DRIVING LAW BANS HAND-HELD CELL PHONE USE WHILE DRIVING
HB-2318, which was signed into law by Governor Ducey last year, took effect on January 1, 2021. The law bans hand-held cell phone use while driving, and imposes a $75 to $149 fine for first time violations. The fine increases to $150 to $250 for repeat offenders. However, the law has some notable exceptions. One may use a hand-held cell phone when one’s vehicle is parked, at a stoplight, or in the case of an emergency. While drunk driving remains a serious issue, officials have emphasized that distracted driving presents much of the same if not more danger than driving while under the influence. According to Phoenix Police Sergeant Maggie Cox, distracted drivers are six times more dangerous than impaired drivers.
Garrison Law Firm implores drivers to commit to hands-free driving moving forward, not only avoid tickets and fines, but for their own safety and that of others. For over the past 30 years, attorney Kevin Garrison has sought justice for personal injury victims and their families. Should you or a loved be injured on the roadways, Garrison Law Firm can provide you with legal representation. Garrison Law Firm welcomes all questions and can be reached either by phone or online.

FATAL BOATING COLLISION AT BARTLETT LAKE

https://www.uscgboating.org/library/accident-statistics/Recreational-Boating-Statistics-2019.pdf
Authorities are currently investigating a fatal boating collision that took place at Bartlett Lake on Monday morning, March 8. The collision took place around 11 a.m. One boat carrying a single occupant and another boat carrying two occupants collided with each other. The driver of the single occupant boat suffered fatal injuries from collision and pronounced dead at the scene, while two occupants of the other did not suffer any injuries. Further details have not been released at this time.
The number of recreational boat crashes as well as related deaths and injuries have declined in the last 20 years according to the 2019 Recreational Boating Statistics compiled by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, and Office of Auxiliary and boating Safety. Figures from 2019 show that 4168 boating accidents caused 613 deaths and 2559 injuries, whereas 7740 accidents caused 701 deaths and 4355 injuries in 2000. Further, only 1.1% of the fatal boating collisions in the United States in 2019 in Arizona. While the statistics present an optimistic outlook for risks and dangers of recreational boating in Arizona, they have not been completely eliminated. Recreational boaters should still exercise care and caution when on the water as well as consider some type of education or training.
