CITY OF BARTLETT ANIMAL SHELTER
May 23, 2018 at 7:24 PM ·
This will be a long but very useful post. It is the time of year when a lot of our local wildlife is raising their babies. In this post, you will find some helpful information about the wildlife you may see in your yard or around town.
DUCKS AND GEESE: You may see momma ducks and geese in places you would not normally see them such as parking lots, swimming pools, crossing the roads, etc. Ducks and geese both hatch their eggs and raise their babies AWAY from water. Should you see them, leave them alone. DO NOT take them back to water. When ducklings are small, they are food for other wildlife in the lakes such as turtles and snakes. Also, mom is often injured by the other ducks and geese. As the babies get older, you may find momma leading them to water and then back to their nest. Please do not interrupt this process. She is teaching them how to survive. If you have a family in your yard, keep dogs away from them. They are usually only there for a few weeks. Sit back, relax, watch nature, and brag to your friends how you helped provide a safe home.
TURTLES: You may see turtles crossing the roadways. Guess what! They too lay their eggs away from water. If you see a turtle in the roadway, do not remove it from the area. Simply help it across in the direction it was heading. If you find a baby turtle, leave him alone. It is illegal to own many types of turtles. They are happier in the wild, not in your tank.
RABBITS: Momma rabbits are working overtime to raise their young. They fix their nests in tall grass or under bushes, many times in your flower bed. The mommas will leave the nest to forage for food but they will be back. Do not remove the babies! In most cases, you will not see momma come back but she does come back when you are not around. She is afraid of you.
In short, all these behaviors are natural. No, you do not have a confused duck or rabbit in your yard. These moms know what they are doing. They have been doing it for years, long before human intervention. In fact, most wildlife babies taken from their mom, do not survive. Their best chance is with their mom. We ask that you please allow these mommas to do their jobs and not touch or move them in any way. Thanks guys!
