This current Covid19 Pandemic is creating anxiety, wreaking havoc on our economy, and has suddenly changed our daily routines.
The financial disaster we’re currently facing is, in some ways, not much different than kind of problems we, at Gates Law, have helped people overcome for over 40 years.
Many people live paycheck to paycheck. And those who don’t, often still do not have nearly enough savings to last for the duration of this crisis, whether it be 3, 6, or 9 months, or possibly longer.
Some of us will need to borrow funds, rely on credit cards, personal loans, and any other means available to make it through this disaster.
While the Federal Stimulus package will provide help to most Americans, it likely will not be enough to bridge the gap for most people. Given that we do not know quite how long this crisis is going to last, we need to be prepared to settle in for the long haul. Conserving our funds, focusing on our families and preparing for lean times is probably the best mind set for the moment.
This may include choosing to not pay general unsecured debts, such as credit cards, medical bills, and personal loans, until we have a better sense of when we may resume some semblance of normal life.
Such significant loss of income, medical bills due to illness, and general increase in debt because of the current National emergency, will likely quickly grow into a problem bigger than many of us can handle.
Filing personal bankruptcy can offer relief when this happens. The Bankruptcy Code can allow us to keep our property, wipe out overwhelming unsecured debt, and give us a fresh start to rebuild our credit.
The United States Bankruptcy Courts for the Eastern District of Virginia are open and new bankruptcy cases are still able to be filed.
Gates Law Offices are open. We are still answering phone calls, checking messages, and making appointments. We can speak with you over the phone or virtually, using Zoom, Skype, or Facetime.
Our clients can still drop off documents at either of our office in Chesterfield or Amelia, as well as mailing them to our PO Box. We also can accept PDF documents via email at all times.
