We are beyond excited to have Charlotte Whitmore, Adjunct Professor Boston College Innocence Program join us as our soapbox speaker this afternoon.
She has navigated the complicated mechanics of law, politics, and human relationships to correct injustices like Eugene Gilyard experienced when he was convicted of murder and robbery in 1998. The Pennsylvania Innocence Project's fight for Eugene led to his release after 15 years in prison.
Read Caste: The Origins of our Discontent by Isabel Wilkerson with us. Join our discussion at our first book club meeting hosted by Ken Bigger from @chilitalli on October 20.
“[Caste] is a powerful, illuminating and heartfelt account of how hierarchy reproduces itself, as well as a call to action for the difficult work of undoing it.”—The Washington Post

A little feel-good content to CARRY you into the weekend....get it?! 😂 A throwback to 2017 and our iconic Carry Water experience where students learn what it feels like to carry water. This physically grueling experience asks students to consider the value of the water they use every day.
Next week, first-year students will take on this challenge. We'll see how they do!

Better late than never. Yesterday was World Teachers' Day. Our teachers are always awesome, but now more than ever, we are so grateful for their creativity and extra efforts.

Last Wednesday, students in the Water class embarked on our iconic Carry Water field experience. As they investigate water scarcity around the world, they examine their own relationship with water and experience what it feels like to carry water.
We were so happy to gather as a class at 1535 N Dayton for a little bit of nostalgia. And we were so impressed by how well this group of 9th-graders worked together.
Thank you to our veterans today and every day. We visit the National Veterans Art Museum every year where we get a glimpse of the stories and experiences veterans carry with them through the art they create.
The Juniors in the Rhetoric course have been studying the rhetoric of policymakers, government officials, and community organizers this term. In the midst of the presidential race, they had A LOT to analyze. Ugo Okere visited the class in what he endearingly called Zoom University to talk about his views on the presidential debate and his own experience running for office.

So much love to Sharon and Ron from Earth Rider Cycling for welcoming the Juniors into their homey shop to learn about bike mechanics and bike safety. The cherry on top: riding the e-bikes on an unusually beautiful day!

Students in Design & Engineering are heading to Earth Rider Cycling to learn about the anatomy of different types of bicycles in order to design their own bikes. Testing and research are important steps in the design process– check out last year's students testing out these smooth-riding e-bikes.

We're excited for a conversation on implicit bias with Tiffany Harper this afternoon. Tiffany is a practicing attorney and diversity leader in Chicago, Illinois. She’s a change agent, advocate, and avid supporter of women. She is best known for using her voice to challenge the status quo and fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.
Check out what Tiffany is thinking and talking about:

‘Inaugural,’ an Original Poem by Jericho Brown, winner of the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, on the occasion of the
inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
--------------
"We’ve put our hunger down for the time it takes
To come and reconcile ourselves to the land
Because it is holy, to the water
Because it swallowed our ancestors,
To the air because we are dumb enough
To decide on something as difficult
As love. If no one’s punishment leads to
My salvation, then accountability
Is what waits. It moves citizens, mends nations.
That’s for us to prove. That’s the deed to witness.
That’s the single item on the agenda
Read in Braille or by eye, ink drying like blood
Spilled this American hour of our lives."

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character- that is the goal of true education.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Students in Who Am I? are exploring the self through philosophy. Last year, students journeyed to Uptown to learn about Eastern philosophy and the Bhagavad Gita from Shira and Gilad at New Acropolis Chicago.
Unable to physically gather this year, Shira and Gilad brought their lesson to us via Zoom! We are so grateful to make these meaningful and relevant connections. 🙌 ❤️
