During the month of October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, vouchers for free mammograms are available at Coconis Furniture locations and the Genesis Cancer Care Center for community members to pick up. Our vascular surgery team has started using the TCAR (TransCarotid Artery Revascularization) procedure to treat carotid artery disease. Carotid artery disease results from plaque build-up in the neck arteries, increasing the risk of stroke, which affects over 800,000 Americans every year. The Genesis Heart and Vascular team utilize two advanced technologies to treat structural heart disease: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and MitraClip. TAVR is a minimally invasive way of treating heart valve disease, which is the most common form of structural heart disease. Patients only stay in the hospital for an average of one or two days. After that, they can resume normal activities within a week.
MitraClip is the newest addition to the Structural Heart Program at Genesis. It is minimally invasive and used to treat mitral regurgitation, also known as a leaky heart valve. MitraClip helps the mitral valve to close correctly and restore normal blood flow to the heart. Patients stay in the hospital for one to three days after the procedure.

I would like to thank the Muskingum Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the 5th grade students from West Muskingum Middle School. It was so nice of you both to think of the Respiratory Department today. We were excited to get all the goodies and especially the homemade cards. Even though the cards brought tears to our eyes, we enjoyed them so much. We can never thank you both enough for taking time out of your busy lives to think of us. We will keep the cards and the precious, caring words in our hearts and minds, especially during this extremely busy and stressful time. Know that you both put a smile on our faces and a snack in our hungry bellies today. Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Please share with the 5th grade class that their beautiful, inspiring words of encouragement and compassion were received.
It sure did brighten up my night walking into work to see the colorful cards laying out for us to read. I always enjoyed doing that as a student myself making cards to share for people to brighten up their day. And I’m glad to see a school system still honor that for the community. I always felt it was important for kids to write cards that sometimes it’s more heartfelt than just buying them. And it teaches them to look into their hearts and to find words of strength, kindness and respect In a positive way. I kept reading them throughout my night to keep the positive thoughts and energy for what we are doing through this tough pandemic and other times of caring for my patients and their families. Thank you to everyone involved for allowing the students to share their thoughts and make cards. Merry Christmas and have a safe New Year.

COVID-19 vaccine distribution will enter Phase 1b in the coming weeks. The phased approach to distribution in Ohio is focused on reaching critical groups. Phase 1b recipients include: Ohioans age 65 and older, Ohioans of any age living with severe congenital, developmental, or early-onset medical disorders, and adults who work in k-12 schools.
