The final #SurvivorSaturday of #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth is very special because it's one of our own! Lauren Peyton was treated at #MSKKids, our pediatric program, when she was fourteen and is now a Clinical Nurse IV at #MSKMonmouth. She was first diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma and later had myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia. Lauren needed a stem cell transplant and was matched with a donor from Germany. They were able to meet in person and are now close friends who text every day and even have matching tattoos to symbolize their connection! Lauren was inspired by her own nurses to become a nurse. She said, "Every day I’m really grateful for everything MSK has done for me. Having that support behind you as a patient inspired me to provide that to people.” Lauren also added, "What COVID has taught us, and what being a survivor has taught me, is that you can plan as much as you want but you cannot control what happens. I have learned to live in the moment.” We're so grateful to have you on our team, Lauren! #MSKHealthcareHeroes
Treatment for #prostatecancer can cause side effects, but one way to combat them is through exercise. It can boost strength and muscle mass, reduce fatigue, and improve quality of life. Lee Jones, an exercise scientist at MSK, shares more details, including the best type of exercise for those receiving a common prostate cancer therapy. https://bit.ly/307wpdL MSKCC.ORG How Can Exercise Help People with Prostate Cancer?

When he was 13, Joey developed an adrenal cortical carcinoma, a cancer that's extremely rare in children. So rare that his care team brought in MSK's in-house team of disease detectives, the Pediatric Translational Medicine Program (PTMP), to learn more about it and see if other treatments might help. How do you process finding out at 31 years old that you have breast cancer and that you will not be able to carry children? As Virginia Wettlaufer Tomenson says "you spend the rest of your life trying to make someone's tomorrow better than your yesterday." At 31, Gina was diagnosed with triple positive Stage III breast cancer after finding a lump in her breast during a workout class. Six months into a new relationship (with her now husband) the life of traveling for her career, parties with friends and young fun love turned into chemotherapy, mastectomy, radiation and fertility preservation. "The speed at which everything was happening, the amount of information I was trying to consume and the physical toll that was being put on my body had me living for two years on adrenaline. As things started to slow down, I began to ask myself why this happened to me and I knew it was because I had to give back to those who would face what I would some day." Gina has not only become an active supporter of Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) by being a member of the Society and most recently the Chair of the Associates committee but also serving as a patient to patient advisor in MSK’s Patient & Caregiver Support Program and a patient advisor on MSK’s Patient and Family Advisory Council for Quality (PFACQ). Outside of MSK, Gina took on two important legislative initiatives in New York State. First to ensure that fertility preservation for cancer patients would be covered by insurance, which was passed and went into effect January of this year. Secondly, surrogacy to become legal in New York State. Gina's daughter was born in Colorado and son in Georgia and she vowed to make this process easier for others. In January of 2021, surrogacy will be legal in NYS. Whether in the halls of MSK, on the streets of UES of Manhattan with her kids or in Albany - you will find Gina proudly looking to make tomorrow better than yesterday. #MSKPFACQSpotlight #MSKPFACQ #PFAC #patientengagement #breastcancerawarenessmonth #memorialsloankettering #breastcancer

This spring, several of our own #MSKHealthcareHeroes were treated at MSK for COVID19. One of them was physician-scientist Dr. Yu Chen. In May, we shared a video of him being discharged from the hospital. We spoke with him recently to learn more about his experience and see how he’s been doing since. Dr. Chen told us he was diagnosed at the peak of the first wave of the pandemic in New York City. He began feeling progressively worse and was admitted to the hospital on April 7. He knew he wanted to be treated at MSK because he knew how outstanding the nurses are and how much they care about their patients. Dr. Chen ended up spending several days in the ICU, but was actually one of the first patients to receive convalescent plasma as part of a clinical trial at MSK. He improved very quickly within 24 hours and left the ICU three days later, then went home five days after that. He was able to begin working again from home within about a week. Dr. Chen says his colleagues were incredibly supportive throughout and rallied around his family. (Pictured here is the photo he and his two daughters sent to them to say thank you!) Luckily, he said he has no lingering effects from the disease. Above all, Dr. Chen said, “I really want to give a special shout out to the nurses and nurse assistants. The nurses were the true front line people. They make as big if not bigger impact on the inpatient care.” We’re so happy to have Dr. Chen back at work with us!

You may remember Enver and Miranda from their MSK wedding back in August. Enver was receiving inpatient treatment for leukemia which made them realize they didn’t want to wait to get married. So Enver’s care team made magic happen on M12 in what he calls the most emotional moment of his life. It even got featured in The New York Times! We checked in with them to see how they’re doing. Enver says that “married life is the best.” He was discharged from the hospital a week after the wedding and is currently undergoing outpatient chemotherapy. He says it’s been hard, especially because Miranda can’t be with him while he’s getting treatment due to the pandemic, but that the RNs at MSK make it as comfortable as possible and cheer him up. When Enver has time off from chemo, he and Miranda try to make the most of their time together by going on hikes and doing things like celebrating Hanukkah. They’re looking forward to an end to the pandemic so they can celebrate their marriage with friends and family. When asked what he would like to tell his previous self from August, Enver said, “Just listen to what your wife says. She is going to be right about almost everything in the next four months and perhaps in the future.” Very wise words! 😉
