Education
After earning his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, Dr. George Matthews received his dental degree from the University of Alabama in 1958. He served his general surgery internship from 1962 through 1963 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham hospital. He completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the same institution in 1965.

Dr. Matthews is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Career Path/Organization Memberships
Dr. Matthews operated his own private practice from 1962 until 2002. During that time, he was had a faculty appointment as a clinical professor of oral surgery in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His current hospital appointments include UAB Highlands and St. Vincent’s Medical Center, both located in Birmingham. Dr. Matthews is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Dentists, the American Dental Association, and the Alabama Dental Association. He is past president of Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Alabama Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Birmingham District Dental Society.
Current Practice
In 2002, Dr. Matthews joined Drs. Clark and Holmes joined at a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery facility located in the historic Southside neighborhood of Birmingham. They have since opened other locations in downtown Trussville and in the community of Inverness. The group offers a wide range of treatments, including extractions, orthognathic surgery, dental implants, cosmetic, and reconstructive procedures.
