#FunFactFriday Do you actually have a funny bone in your elbow? 💪 It turns out your “funny bone” is not a bone at all, but rather a small section of a relatively exposed nerve. The ulnar nerve runs from your neck to your hand and is exposed in a vulnerable position as it crosses the elbow joint. If struck in this area, it creates that “funny” sensation that shoots down your arm! Give us a call at (631) 360-2200 today to schedule an appointment with one of our orthopedic physicians. 📅 . . . . . . . #LIOS #Smithtown #Orthopedics #StonyBrookMedicine #FunnyBone
Today is #WorldHeartDay! Without a healthy heart, it is difficult to maintain an active lifestyle that keeps your muscles, bones and joints in good condition. Keep your heart in tip-top shape by incorporating healthy habits into your daily life such as eating healthy and limiting sugary drinks. What is the difference between a cortisone and steroid injection? 🤷‍♂️ Cortisone is actually a type of steroid, known as a corticosteroid. It differs from those more commonly associated with bodybuilding, known as anabolic steroids. Corticosteroids mimic a hormone naturally produced in the body to decrease pain and inflammation. These cortisone injections are commonly used in our office to treat the shoulders, spine or knees. They can provide relief anywhere from a few days to permanently. Have questions about cortisone injections? Give us a call today at (631) 360-2200, our doctors look forward to getting you back to the activities you love! ♥️ . . . . . . . #LIOS #Smithtown #Orthopedics #StonyBrookMedicine #Cortisone #PainManagement
How does the Achilles tendon rupture? 💭 The Achilles tendon is the thick band of tissue that you can see and feel above your heel. It connects your calf muscles to your foot. A rupture typically occurs with a sudden force change while playing sports, such as jumping or rapid acceleration. Symptoms include feeling a “pop” like getting kicked in the ankle, significant pain and motion loss. Full ruptures should be evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon to determine the best course of treatment. Need an orthopedist? What is nerve pain? How is it different from bone or muscle pain? 🤷‍♂️ It is important that you describe the pain that you are feeling to your doctor. Sometimes patients will classify their pain as “nerve pain” without fully understanding the definition. Nerve pain can typically present as numbness, tingling, burning, shooting or pins and needles. This pain can occur both in conjunction with or independent of orthopedic injuries. The office is open! What is viscosupplementation? Is it right for me? 💭 Viscosupplementation is the injection of hyaluronic acid into arthritic joints. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that already exists within your joints and assists in lubrication and shock absorption. The additional hyaluronic acid will not cure osteoarthritis but may help in alleviating your symptoms. This treatment can consist of one or three injections and the type used will depend on your insurance coverage. 📅Schedule an appointment today to see if you are a good candidate for viscosupplementation injections by calling (631) 360-2200. . . . . . . . #LIOS #Smithtown #Orthopedics #StonyBrookMedicine #Arthritis #JointPain
Did you know that one of the most common causes of shoulder pain is shoulder impingement? 🤔 Shoulder impingement occurs when there is compression of the rotator cuff tendons as they pass through an area of the scapula (shoulder blade). Contributing factors can include bony irregularities, bursitis, muscle weakness, overuse and/or poor posture. Symptoms of shoulder impingement can include a gradual onset of pain with overhead activities and pain at night. If left untreated, shoulder impingement can progress to more serious issues, such as frozen shoulder. Have shoulder pain? Schedule an appointment today at (631) 360-2200 to discuss your treatment options. . . . . . . . #LIOS #Smithtown #Orthopedics #StonyBrookMedicine #ShoulderImpingement #ShoulderPain
Do you know what bursitis is? 🤷‍♀️ Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa – one of the small fluid-filled sacs located around your body to act as a shock absorber and prevent friction of soft tissue around the joint. Bursitis most commonly occurs in the elbow, hips or knee and can be caused by overuse, infection or a direct blow. Symptoms can include stiffness and noticeable swelling around the joint. Today is #GlobalHandwashingDay. With the COVID-19 pandemic, hand hygiene is more important than ever. 🧼 According to the CDC, handwashing can prevent 1 in 5 respiratory infections, such as cold and flu. Many people often touch their eyes, nose and mouth without realizing it, which introduces germs into their bodies. Handwashing can help fight the spread of germs and illnesses in our communities. . . . . . . . #LIOS #Smithtown #Orthopedics #StonyBrookMedicine #GlobalHandwashingDay
What is the difference between a high ankle sprain and a “regular” ankle sprain? A “regular” ankle sprain damages the medial and lateral ankle, while the high ankle sprain damages the structures just above the ankle joint. Recovery is much shorter for a regular ankle sprain than a high ankle sprain. Schedule an appointment with one of our board-certified orthopedists by giving us a call at (631) 360-2200 today.
What is a high ankle sprain? A high ankle sprain damages the structures just above the ankle joint. This area is also known as ankle syndesmosis, which connects the lower leg bones (the fibula and tibia). Symptoms include pain, inflammation and difficulty weight-bearing. Management is typically a period of non-weight bearing followed by physical therapy. If you’re experiencing symptoms similar to an ankle sprain, give us a call at (631) 360-2200 to schedule a consultation today.

❓ Did you know that the hamstring isn’t one muscle, but rather, a group of muscles? These hamstring muscles run down the back of the thigh and consist of the semitendinosus, semimembranosus and biceps femoris. Hamstring muscle injuries, such as a “pulled hamstring,” occur commonly in athletes and older people. These injuries may be due to extreme stretching or overload during a sport or poor flexibility. If you pull your hamstring, you may notice a sudden, sharp pain in the back of your thigh. Other symptoms may include swelling, bruising or discoloration and weakness. 📅 Are you experiencing hamstring pain? Here are some tips on what to wear for your appointment 📰 As we head into the colder months, remember to dress appropriately for your visit. This means wearing loose, comfortable clothes that will allow your physician to easily examine your injury (ex: do NOT wear tight jeans for a knee evaluation). Also, remember to leave on any casts, splints or boots placed on your injury by other physicians, urgent cares or emergency room visits. Our staff will properly remove them if needed. 🤷‍♂️ Have a question about your upcoming visit? #ShoulderSurgerySeries Other than the anatomic shoulder arthroplasty, the reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is the second type of total joint replacement for the shoulder. 🩺 This procedure differs from the traditional anatomical version in that the ball and socket components of the shoulder are reversed. An RSA is typically used for patients suffering from severe arthritis in conjunction with massive rotator cuff tears or patients who have failed an anatomical arthroplasty. The reverse nature of the procedure allows larger muscles such as the deltoids to function in place of the rotator cuff. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (631) 360-2200. . . . . #LIOS #Smithtown #Orthopedics #SportsMedicine #StonyBrookMedicine #Surgery
#ShoulderSurgerySeries What is anatomic shoulder arthroplasty? 👨‍⚕️ This surgery is a total shoulder joint replacement. While not as frequent as a knee or hip replacement, it is also commonly used as an option to treat joint pain and dysfunction arising from severe arthritis. The procedure involves replacing the glenohumeral joint with metal and plastic components to recreate the anatomical ball and socket structure. This is typically recommended when more conservative options such as physical therapy have failed. If you’re experiencing shoulder joint pain, give us a call at (631) 360-2200 to schedule a consultation today. 📅 . . . . #LIOS #Smithtown #Orthopedics #SportsMedicine #StonyBrookMedicine #Surgery

#ShoulderSurgerySeries If you tear your bicep tendon or are experiencing inflammation of the shoulder, your orthopedic surgeon may recommend biceps tenodesis. 💪 This procedure can be done alone or as part of a larger procedure such as a rotator cuff repair. During the operation, the biceps tendon is released from its attachment within the shoulder joint and reattached to the nearby humerus bone. To schedule a consultation, give us a call at (631) 360-2200 today. . . . . #LIOS #Smithtown #Orthopedics #SportsMedicine #StonyBrookMedicine #Surgery #BicepsTenodesis
#ShoulderSurgerySeries What is a rotator cuff repair? 🤷‍♂️ Our rotator cuffs are made up of four different muscles, which typically tear at the tendon (the area where the muscle is attached to the bone). Depending on age and function, full-thickness tears of these tendons can/should be repaired. At LIOS, this procedure is done arthroscopically and involves reattaching the tendon with sutures and/or other hardware. As with other shoulder surgeries, other minor procedures may be done in conjunction to repair associated damage. Have questions? Give us a call at (631) 360-2200 today. . . . . #LIOS #Smithtown #Orthopedics #SportsMedicine #StonyBrookMedicine #Surge #RotatorCuffTear
#ShoulderSurgerySeries What is a Bankart repair? 💭 A Bankart repair is a surgery used to treat a type of labral tear known as a Bankart lesion. Typically, it is performed to address shoulder instability resulting from a shoulder dislocation. This procedure can repair the damaged portion of the labrum by re-anchoring it back to the proper place using sutures. At Long Island Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, Bankart repair is performed arthroscopically on an outpatient basis. Have questions? Schedule an appointment today by calling (631) 360-2200. . . . . #LIOS #Smithtown #Orthopedics #SportsMedicine #StonyBrookMedicine #Surgery

Winter is coming this week! ❄️ All the snow and ice can be a safety hazard, but removal can commonly lead to injury. Check out the following safety tips to reduce your risk of orthopedic injury this winter: ☑️ Treat snow shoveling like any other workout – make sure to warm up before and after. ☑️ Listen to your body – take breaks every 10-15 minutes as needed. Stand up straight, walk around or do some quick stretches to stay loose to keep from overworking your body. ☑️ Hydrate – it’s a tough job and you may be doing more work than you think! ☑️ Head out early – two or three inches of fresh, loose snow is easier to shovel multiple times than eight inches of tightly packed snow. . . . . #LIOS #Smithtown #Orthopedics #SportsMedicine #StonyBrookMedicine #Snow
Today is the first day of winter! ❄️ When winter arrives, so does the snow! Shoveling snow leads to thousands of emergency department and physician office appointments each year. Check out some tips for maintaining proper body mechanics while shoveling to help reduce your risk of orthopedic injury: ☑️ Push the snow instead of lifting it. If you must lift, bend with your knees and not your back. ☑️ Walk the snow to the area you are dumping it - do not throw it. ☑️ Avoid twisting or tossing snow over your shoulder. ☑️ Alternate sides of your body to prevent imbalanced stresses.
