Grief is a universal experience that we all share. Many of us have been touched by grief ourselves, and we know how painful it can be. As a good friend or loved one, we want to protect, support and care for the people in our lives. When we see a grieving friend, it is natural to want to help. But it is important to remember that the way we connect can be helpful or harmful, depending on how we engage. Read how you can support a grieving friend: https://gilchristcares.org/grieving-friend/

Wilmina Sydnor, Gilchrist volunteer, shares her #IHopeWeRemember reflection.
Understanding the benefits of early palliative care requires understanding palliative care in general. Palliative care is not a single service but rather a philosophy of care focused on comfort and symptom management. There is a myth that palliative care is the same as hospice care. This is far from true. Palliative care encompasses hospice care, but hospice care is only a small slice of the palliative pie. Hospice care starts when all other options have been exhausted, and a cure is no longer possible. https://gilchristcares.org/benefits-early-palliative-care/

Congratulations to Lisa Yost, our latest Caught You Caring Winner! Nominated by Kimberlee Kahl, We Honor Veterans Coordinator, Kim says, "In the past few months during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lisa has continued to be a huge support to the We Honor Veterans Program and the veterans receiving Gilchrist's care. She continues to make requests for the Salute to Service Tributes even though it takes more creativity and strategies which now include Zoom and FaceTime. She didn’t want our veterans to miss out being honored due to the changes in visitation. So along with our veteran volunteers, Lisa mastered the new process and continues to make sure the veterans and their families are honored. We have received very moving notes of thanks from families who have received this tribute for their loved one. The We Honor Veterans Program feels very lucky to have Lisa on our team.”
Today is #SocialMediaActionDay which brings #HospiceAwareness during #HospiceMonth. Hospice care is not just for a patient’s final days. The earlier hospice is started, the more time a family has to connect with the hospice team and receive valuable help and support—creating a richer experience for everyone involved. #hapc #hapcFacesofCaring #MoreTime

"We at Gilchrist often hear from families: ‘I wish we had called you sooner.’ While it’s true that more and more people are taking advantage of hospice and palliative care, too many wait until the final days of life. During National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, it’s important to raise awareness that the earlier a person begins hospice and palliative care, the more they can benefit. Most people wish to spend their final months of life at home with family focusing on quality of life rather than enduring difficult trips to emergency rooms and medical appointments. Hospice and palliative care can help them achieve these goals and live as fully as possible."

As the nation honors American heroes for their military service on #VeteransDay, November 11, Gilchrist staff and volunteers will celebrate with area residential care facility residents by screening a special Veterans Day video honoring all veterans. On this #VeteransDay, we want to share a wonderful story of how we are making every effort to still honor and respect veterans. Due to the pandemic, the Gilchrist staff and veteran volunteers were unable to conduct a recent Salute to Service Tribute in person. That did not deter the Gilchrist team from working with the facility staff to find a way to safely honor this Vietnam Veteran. They arranged for the veteran to be brought to the window to see his family and Gilchrist volunteers in attendance, while the ceremony was conducted over the phone. It was a meaningful and heartfelt tribute. The veteran was presented with a Gilchrist certificate of appreciation, a We Honor Veterans pin, a 50th Anniversary Vietnam Veterans pin, a thank you card from a student, and a handmade patriotic quilt. The team also presented his wife with a Proud Wife of a Veteran pin and a patriotic scarf. The SST concluded with a formal salute by the veteran volunteers.

It's not often we get to help celebrate a patient's 100th birthday, but with the help of niece, Joan Calloway, Gilchrist social worker Dawn Linthicum, chaplain Joao Teixeira and nurse Lauren Wilson got to do just that. In addition to a card from the team, each team member added to the celebration in touching ways - Dawn brought flowers in the patient's favorite colors, Joao brought balloons and Lauren brought a cake. Several of patient Irene Forward's family members joined the celebration by walking past a window where Irene could see their smiles, waves, and other well-wishes. When asked how she feels being 100, Irene said, "I feel wonderful. This means so much to me. Thank you for coming and celebrating."

GBMC - Greater Baltimore Medical Center has received the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and Gilchrist is proud to be a part of the GBMC HealthCare System! GBMC President and CEO Dr. Chessare received a call directly from U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross last week announcing the news. GBMC HealthCare is the only healthcare system in Maryland to ever receive the Baldrige Award and one of only 29 health care recipients in the United States in more than two decades of the award’s history. Achieving the nation’s highest presidential honor for performance excellence is a testament to how well we approach our work, but our jobs are never complete. Along with GBMC, we will study the Baldrige feedback report, learn from it, and continuously improve for the good of our community.
Congratulations to Laurel Freeman who is our latest #CaughtYouCaring Winner! Laurel has been a clinical counselor and grief counselor for Gilchrist for 13 years and has been a key team member in a challenging situation involving a fractured family. She has been the advocate/communications channel between the hospice team and family and help avert further conflict during an emotional time for all. Dr. Riley, Gilchrist's Chief Medical Officer worked closely with Laurel and said, "I have only the highest praise for the work that Laurel does and the work she did with this family and wish to recognize her for the work that is well above and beyond what is expected." Thank you, Laurel!

Did you know that November is National Family Caregivers Month? If you are a caregiver, you may not realize what day it is, let alone what month—especially during this pandemic. The GBMC Sub-acute Unit, with medical care provided by Gilchrist, once again received the highest possible rating on U.S. News & World Report’s 2021 list of the Best Nursing Homes, released in October. The report ranks nursing facilities nationwide on a 1-to-5 rating scale, based on evaluations from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, considering 10 quality measures focusing on factors like patient care and safety outcomes, staffing data and health inspection reports. This year, the nursing home profile pages were updated to include a patient safety summary that reflects COVID-19 data alongside other measurements of safety. U.S. News rated over 15,000 nursing homes to come up with the list. The Sub-acute Unit, located at GBMC, is a 27-bed unit licensed as a skilled nursing facility. It serves patients who need short-term rehabilitation following a hospitalization, with the goal of returning to their prior level of function and independence.

Congratulations to Patricia (Patsy) Flanagan, social worker on the Integrative and Palliative Medicine team, for her recent Peer-to-Peer Award! She is recognized for Better Care and Ethical Behavior. Her nomination stated: Due to the pandemic, a lot of our processes and workflows changed. No visitors was probably the hardest one to manage—not only for staff, but especially for patients and families. Patsy tasked herself to figure out a way to create a voice for patients. Patsy developed a communication tool called “Meet My Loved One.” This tool was a way for families to feel like they can contribute to their loved one’s care by providing us simple and meaningful information like:nick-names, hobbies, activities, interests they enjoyed before becoming ill, and what they might appreciate during their stay (tv, music). Additionally, the tool asked, “What would you like the staff to know about your loved one?” and “Tell me three tips we should know to care for your loved one.”

She readily jumps in to help when there is a problem or something is not going ‘according to plan’ in the referral/liaison/admission process on the front end.

Congratulations to Jennifer Lavoie, Admissions Coordinator, for winning the latest Caught You Caring Award! Jennifer’s nomination said: “Jennifer is always so patient and kind to everyone. She readily jumps in to help when there is a problem or something is not going ‘according to plan’ in the referral/liaison/admission process on the front end. There have been many firsts for me while covering the liaison role and every single time, she made the process so much better. You will never hear her say ‘not my job.’ Whenever you see Jennifer she has a warm smile and is just the kind of co-worker that makes the job so nice to come to every day. She embodies the spirit of this award.”

Congratulations to Courtney Charest, Admissions Coordinator for winning our latest Caught You Caring Award! Please say hello to Gilchrist Social Worker Kimberly Flash and join us in thanking her for her dedication to Gilchrist and the patients and families she supports. We asked Kim to share a little about her role here at Gilchrist: "I have worked at Gilchrist for just over 14 years. By now, it feels like family, and it's nice to work with many people I've known for such a long time. At Gilchrist, I have loved the opportunity to be engaged in the lives of people at a very vulnerable and challenging time. I believe that all people, our patients who are facing their own mortality, and their family and friends who are caring for them, deserve to have the counseling and emotional support that will help them through what can be a difficult time. It's a privilege to be part of this journey with our patients and families."
March is National Women’s History Month. The month is set aside, in part, to honor women’s contributions in American history. It also provides an opportunity to celebrate the women in our lives that we may have lost. Congratulations to Angel Keil, Clinical Social Worker, for her recent Peer-to-Peer award winner. Her nomination said: “We had a patient on home hospice services whose family expressed interest to Angel in having a marriage ceremony for the patient and his long-time girlfriend. Angel quickly got to work. She assisted the family in obtaining a marriage license, flowers and arranged for her team's chaplain, who is an ordained minister, to perform the ceremony. Angel served as a witness and a photographer for the family. The family expressed how much they appreciated Angel and how she was able to arrange the wedding so quickly.”

Wendy Kobb has worked as a Gilchrist SW since 2006 when there was only one facility team. She sees her role as helping to prepare patients and their families for a peaceful and dignified end of life. Since the pandemic the particular challenge for hospice social workers has been to help families feel connected to their loved ones. So many family members did not have the opportunity to visit due to the facility Covid precautions. Wendy worked over the past year to help patients feel less isolated and to assure families that their loved ones continued to receive support and companionship when they couldn't be there themselves.
Gilchrist’s social workers provide support, counseling, and many forms of assistance to our patients and their families.
