The Story Behind Go Sober™
Go Sober™ started from a personal passion to help others stop the destructive cycle of alcoholism. Although the idea for an effective alcohol treatment program formalized in 2007, the story begins in our founder, Greg Hoffman’s, childhood.
Growing up as a child of an alcoholic, Greg watched addiction destroy his father. He experienced first-hand the horrible impact of alcoholism. Despite losing his father to alcoholism, Greg found himself wandering down the same dark path. As his addiction grew stronger, Greg knew that he had to escape. However, alcohol held him in a brutal, unrelenting grip.
The Frustrating Battle To Quit Drinking FOREVER
Greg’s battle with alcoholism challenged him to understand why it was so difficult to quit. Even with an intense desire, he simply couldn’t stop. Greg made attempt after attempt to moderate his drinking. Yet, every time he quit, the desire to drink would consume him until he picked up the bottle again. A DUI, failed relationships, lost jobs, numerous AA meetings, declining health, and even 30 days in residential rehab weren’t enough to break the vicious cycle.
Finding The “Cure” That Really Worked
Frustrated with traditional methods, Greg’s research led him to a group of pioneering physicians. This small group was on the cutting edge of using pharmaceutical intervention to treat addiction. Obsessed with finding a treatment that would free him from alcoholism, Greg began an experiential protocol. Within days of starting treatment, a gigantic burden evaporated. The constant “thinking about drinking” was gone. With the desire to drink gone, Greg was able to reshape his life without alcohol.
Greg became even more resolute to battle the societal beliefs that alcoholism is a moral failing or a lack of willpower. He wanted to help others accomplish the dramatic results that he experienced. Working with top neuroscientists, medical professionals, mental-health experts, and addiction specialists, Greg helped develop the initial treatment protocols and launched Go Sober.
Greg is not alone in his mission to help change the world’s attitude toward addiction. Scientists and doctors across the globe continue to build a deeper understanding of how addiction hijacks the human brain. Over 2,000 research papers were presented at the October 2017 Research Society on Alcoholism’s National Conference. National Geographic even recently featured addiction in its cover story, How Science Is Unlocking the Secrets of Addiction, which dives into some of the science and novel treatments for addiction.
To stay on the cutting edge of addiction research and therapies, Greg is member of the Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA), the National Association of Alcohol and Drugs Addiction Counselors (NAADAC), and the Colorado Association of Addiction Professionals (CAAP).
What began as Greg’s personal journey to overcome alcohol addiction and reclaim joy in life became our unique and heart-driven, alcohol treatment program. Go Sober™ treats not only the mechanism of failure, but also the whole person by replacing unwanted drinking with healthy, reward-producing alternatives.
