Congratulations Ken Jakubec on his induction to the Ohio Department of Veterans Services Hall of Fame! Ken has been with our Austintown Quaker Steak and Lube location since Day one. He's a retired Marine who spends his spare time running track meets at AFHS and making sure the stories of hundreds of local veterans are told and remembered. Ken is a staple of the Austintown community and will do anything he can to help a friend. Every year he puts countless hours into organizing and presenting a Patriot Day ceremony, which has recognized over 150 Veterans and honorary civilians over the past 14 years. We’re continuing our #NationalTruckDriverAppreciationWeek celebration by seeing what 2017 Citizen Driver honoree, Idella Hansen is up to today! Since being named Citizen Driver, Idella helped plan and execute three cruises with awards for female drivers and has been active in hosting and attending truck shows. She helped create two new charities, one of which, Trucker Emergency Assistance Responders (TEAR), she is on the board of. She’s also been honored with Real Women in Trucking’s Trucking Industry Trailblazer award. In her spare time, Idella has been working on a documentary. She’s helped edit two books and has been featured in another two. Her portraits with Sisters of the Road were featured in Germany and London, and her story was featured in a profile from StoryCorps, which was broadcast on NPR’s Morning Edition and is now in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. She headed to D.C. in person last year for a meeting and discussion with the Head of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. On top of it all, Idella is still working a full-time job hauling high-value freight. For the last year and a half, she’s been driving team with her grandson. Idella says that being a Citizen Driver has given her the platform to help new professional drivers getting into the business, the opportunity to meet many movers and shakers in the industry and the chance to have her voice heard. “It has shown me that it’s ok to stand up and say, ‘Here I am, see me, I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY!’” she said. Did you miss Maintenance Matters yesterday morning? Homer Hogg has you covered with his favorite caller question from the episode. Question: I continue to drain an excessive amount of moisture from my air tanks. My dryer has been replaced. What might be causing this problem? Answer: When air leaves the air compressor and heads to the dryer it begins to cool down, which causes condensation in the line. This is normal but if the line is too long or has loops in it, the amount of moisture created due to the abnormal cooling will quickly fill the dryer causing it to become ineffective. It is likely your discharge line from your compressor to your dryer has been altered. Have more maintenance questions? Tune into Maintenance Matters, the first and third Thursday of the month at 8 a.m. ET on the Dave Nemo Show, Road Dog Trucking Radio, SiriusXM channel 146.

It’s the first Saturday of the month, and we’re back to check in with another Citizen Driver honoree! After 33 years on the road with Clifford W. Perham, Inc., Denis Litalien has been getting all the miles he can out of retirement. Continuing his long-term volunteer position as Executive Director of the Maine Professional Drivers Association, he’s been involved with fundraisers for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Camp Sunshine, Camp POSTCARD and the American lung association. In September, the organization held its annual Maine Trucking for Kids Convoy, which raised over $9,000 from virtual and in-person participants. With some extra time on his hands, Denis was also able to haul for Wreaths Across America and subsequently helped a good friend place more than 3,000 wreaths on veteran headstones in his hometown. And although he’s retired, Denis is willing to haul a container load or two for Brown Dog Carriers in Biddleford. “I really enjoy helping this three-year-old start-up trucking company, as they do a lot of good in the community while providing some terrific jobs in our area,” said Denis. “They organized the local Wreaths Across America program, and hauled a couple of loads to Arlington National Cemetery.” Retirement also means more time with his wife of 47 years, Debbie. Although the pandemic derailed their travel plans for the year, they were still able to log onto Zoom, see friends and even visit a few west coast TA locations while checking out some national parks. As for being a Citizen Driver, Denis said he is still blown away when someone asks about his dedicated site in Greenland, New Hampshire. “This happens on a regular basis and opens the door to some great conversations,” he said. “I’m in awe of being considered part of the family of Citizen Drivers, and to be one of the drivers recognized for their accomplishments by TA over the past few years. I’ve always felt that this recognition is not just for me, but that I am a representative of all the drivers out there who do their job every day.” Learn more about Denis, and the rest of our Citizen Drivers: www.ta-petro.com/citizendriver/
