Salem Hills, which has long been one of Metro Detroit's most-popular golf courses for the so-called weekend warriors, has announced it will close at the end of the season.
Course owner Frank Godwin sent out a letter to customers Friday, saying "with heavy hearts," the course will close at the end of October.
"It was always our hope that we would find a buyer that would continue operating Salem as a golf course," Godwin wrote. "Since that did not happen, we feel this decision is best for our family.
"These are difficult times for many."
The property hasn't yet been sold, but there has been some recent interest, head pro Jim Grant said.
Salem Hills, a 6,992-yard, par-72 located off Six Mile Road in Northville, opened in 1963, and was designed by Michigan golf legend Bruce Matthews. It used to host a qualifier for the PGA Tour's old Buick Open...

A big challenge for golf today is erasing the stigma of being stuffy and elitist, and country clubs have long been the embodiment of that stereotype.
For example, Detroit Golf Club President Mark Douglas said the private club in northwest Detroit will be able to sustain financial hits from the pandemic partly because it has worked for years to build a pipeline of new members.
Junior members now make up 20-25 percent of the club's 700 total members with the help of a program allowing juniors to obtain full membership at a lower rate. "Flatstick" is a golf slang term for the putter, because putter clubfaces appear (relative to all the other golf clubs) to be flat — to have no loft, in other words.
Other golf clubs have noticeable, sometimes large, amounts of loft. Other than the putter, the driver is least-lofted golf club, for most golfers between nine and 13 degrees of loft. And the lob wedge is the most-lofted, typically from 60 to 64 degrees.
But it turns out that "flatstick" is really a misnomer. Putters aren't flat. They do have loft — just not much of it — and the amount of loft in your putter does matter.
If your putts tend to bounce or skip, that's a sign that the loft of your putter might not be well-suited to your putting style...
