Today, we’re proud to finally share with you the stories of some very special KC area seniors who exemplify what it means to be a Good Sport.
When we started this competition, we could have never predicted just how impactful the stories you all shared with us would be. We are proud to have a platform and an incredible partner in Matt Besler who helped us select these honorees. The pandemic has affected us all, but one group it has had a particularly great effect on is high school athletes. We wanted to honor some of those athletes that have excelled in spite of the pandemic and shown us that not only can we persevere on the field, on the court, but in life outside of sport. The stories of these Good Sports are ones we can all learn from, and ones we admire. Follow along over the coming days as we share their triumphs. #GoodSportKC

Wilmer left his whole life in El Salvador behind to work for a better future here in the US. Despite some of the barriers placed before him to get used to life in his new home, he has benefitted from a shared love of soccer with his new friends. He was able to meet new people and learn to communicate through the sport they all love, as well as set an example for others searching for a better life here. Wilmer is a #GoodSportKC

Payton represented USA women's basketball in 2019 at the Americas Tournament on the U16 team, where they won the gold medal, and has been selected as an all-state volleyball and basketball player. When it came time to again represent the USA in the international U17 tournament in Romania this summer, she had that opportunity dashed due to the coronavirus. But, that hasn't stopped her from continuing to train and share her expertise. Many of Payton's younger teammates and their parents have expressed how attentive she is in helping and how, despite all she has had to miss already, she is always a positive presence.

After 20 years, Natalie helped lead her soccer team to their first state tournament appearance in 20 years. The next year, she lost her entire soccer season due to coronavirus. Despite that, she still showed up to and helped lead the conditioning program though none of the players were actually allowed to even handle a ball. Natalie has shown that through dedication and perseverance it is possible to excel in the classroom and multiple sports all while creating a positive environment. Natalie is a #GoodSportKC
