“- just a cleaning.”
There is so much more going on behind the scenes...to elaborate, here are some things you may not know about your dental hygienist:
- 2 years of prerequisite courses before applying to the limited access program. When accepted, completes 2 more years of intense didactic and clinical courses.
- Mentally and physically challenging - learning a new psychomotor skill while applying recently learned knowledge as you go.
- We are healthcare providers - dental is medical! Required to know the same science of other medical professionals so we can properly help manage all health needs, not just oral...your mouth is the gateway to your complexly connected body.
- We educate, treat, prevent, AND screen for disease whether it’s systemic or oral health related. Many diseases create oral manifestations, and could even be the first sign of a systemic problem.
- Unlike other medical fields that take 1, dental hygienists take 3-5 board exams to acquire licensure. Exams are both written and practical AND specific to geographic location, meaning if we want to live in another state we likely have to take (and pay for) more exams.
- Completion of continuing education hours to renew our license every 2 years. This helps ensure that we stay up to date with new technological and medical advancements.
- We want your experience to be comfortable and stress free. Being licensed to administer local anesthesia (CRDH) is huge in enhancing patient comfort during lengthy/extensive treatment.
- Most importantly, we want to make a difference! No one would sign up for this career, pay for all the expenses, go through the rigorous curriculum & stress of finding all their own patients, continuously preach the oral-systemic link, and tolerate daily wear and tear on their bodies if they did not truly love this field!
So, the next time you go in for “just a cleaning” I hope you take a moment to appreciate all that your dental hygienist has done, and continues to do, to properly care for you...in addition to giving you a kick ass smile 😁
