Mom's Rising is an advocacy organization that is seeking parents to share their childcare experiences and needs. Here's your opportunity! I hope everyone participates here and shares this with family and friends!
As the coronavirus pandemic extends into its seventh month, child care providers and parents are struggling with the impact that it has had on family life, work, and the child care industry. We know that long before the pandemic, a quiet child care crisis already existed after decades of chronic underfunding. During this crisis we must prioritize supporting families’ access to safe, high-quality, and affordable childcare.
This is where you can play a major role in informing what a world with high-quality, accessible child care can look like. MomsRising is partnering with The Century Foundation and the Center for American Progress (CAP) to develop a policy blueprint and legislative ideas for a “child care for all” plan that centers equity. They hope to get feedback and buy-in from diverse stakeholders including parents, early educators, child care providers, and advocates. Which means we want to hear from stakeholders like YOU!
*Take a moment to share your ideas on building a child care system that is accessible, affordable, and inclusive.
Here's the plan: We look to gather your thoughts and feedback to share with elected leaders to influence the priorities reflected in child care legislation in 2021. Though leaders may not embrace all suggested changes, it is still important that they are made aware of the real-life needs of parents and child care providers and ensure these needs shape solutions for families and providers.
Can you spare a few moments to share your valuable insight on child care with us? You can do this now by filling out this form!
Currently, child care providers are facing an extremely uncertain future. According to a survey by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, 40% of the child care centers in the U.S. say they will be forced to shut down if they don't receive support. [1]
This crisis is also further exacerbating long present racial disparities in child care access. According to a Center for American Progress analysis, a lack of child care options negatively affected communities of color before the pandemic, as parents of color were more likely than their non-Hispanic white counterparts to experience child care-related job disruptions that could affect their families’ finances. If policymakers fail to act to address these disparities, this crisis will only intensify. [2]
An uncertain future for child care means an uncertain future for families.
With more than 23 million children under the age of 5 in the US and the families of more than half of them relying on some form of child care, this potential shutdown of child care centers would have devastating impacts on families and our economy. [3]
Please share your thoughts and opinions on child care with us to make a difference!
We need to hear from as many of our members as possible. You are invited to participate in a call to share your experiences with child care and your ideas for how to build a child care system that is accessible, affordable, and inclusive.

The Three O's of Eye Health
Eye screenings performed in your child's school or pediatrician's office are a great way to focus on your child's health. If your child has been referred for follow-up, they need to see an eye doctor. But what types of eye doctors are there? Optometrists and ophthalmologists are both eye doctors, but these specialists follow different educational paths and different scopes of practice.
An ophthalmologist is a physician who specializes in eye health and eye care after graduating from a four-year medical or osteopathic school. In medical school, ophthalmologists study the human body and learn how to detect disease. Ophthalmologists can fit patients for glasses or contact lenses, examine patients, make diagnoses of the eye, and treat eye diseases or conditions medically or surgically, such as amblyopia, crossed eyes, glaucoma, etc.
An optometrist is a doctor who graduates from a four-year optometry program after earning a bachelor's degree. They learn human anatomy and physiology since your eye health is often directly tied to your general health. Optometrists get intensive training on vision and how to correct it with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or other therapies.
Whether you choose to seek care from an optometrist or an ophthalmologist may be related to why your child needs a more comprehensive eye exam. A general rule of thumb might be to start with an optometrist, who might refer you to an ophthalmologist if needed.
If your child is prescribed eyeglasses, your child will meet the final "O!" An optician is a trained technician who has completed a 1-2-year degree, certificate, or diploma program. The optician will fill the prescription given by your child's eye doctor and fit the glasses when they are ready. Opticians also check lens prescriptions, provide, adjust and repair glasses, frames, and contact lenses, take facial measurements, and help you decide on the best type of frames for your child.
To help find an eye care provider, professional associations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Optometric Association, have searchable directories online.

Congratulations on making Honor Roll!
Families and childcare professionals need help to sustain and improve the infrastructure that childcare really is. Learn about the lack of compensation and benefits for most working in this field and how the staffing shortage is at critical levels because few can afford to work for so little. Those working in this field are supporting the cost of childcare by working for low wages and benefits. Things need to change.

Happy March from Greenbelt Children's Center! Sharing some of the STEM activities of the week! Room 3 using our big blue blocks of happiness for engineering ideas and math counting beads and coins into a pot of gold! Room 2 building with blocks large and small and with vehicles. Room 1 made volcanoes out of lemons and having a virtual session with Ms Maria through Zoom. We are loving the sunshine and warmer weather!

From our friend, Claire Lerner, LCSW-C, licensed clinical social worker and child development specialist:
Hi All:
I wanted to let you know about two upcoming, FREE, events where I will be speaking. Details are below. I hope you'll join. Would love to see you there!
On another note, for those of you sending kids back to school, don't be surprised if your child makes a great transition back to the classroom but is falling apart at home. I am hearing about this phenomenon from many parents in recent weeks. It takes a lot of psychic energy for children to make this major adaptation. They leave it all on the table in the classroom and are fried by the time they get home. They have reached their threshold and don't have any more bandwidth to self-regulate once back home where they also feel safer to fall apart.
It is important to show empathy and validation for how hard your children have worked to make this big shift. And bake in more time for connection that your children need right now into your routines. For example, adding an extra book at bedtime and increasing cuddle time before lights-out at bedtime. But don't fall prey to the tendency to let go of important limits. Boundaries are even more important for kids during times of major change. When they are stressed they are more dysregulated. Letting go of important limits ultimately leads to more power struggles and therefore more stress and dysregulation.
You can fill your child's cup while also setting limits. These are not mutually exclusive. It is not love or limits. Limits are loving.
