For many years, engineering students on college campuses all across the United States have participated in the ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition. During these events, students gain hands-on, practical experience by working with concrete mix designs to construct a water-worthy canoe. Unfortunately... there is usually at least one that sinks during the competition! The annual lighting of the community Christmas Tree is taking on a new look this year. It will be brought to you virtually by way of Facebook LIVE. Join Mayor Robert Smith and the “Grinch” as we "flip the switch" and illuminate the tree lights around 6:00 p.m. with Santa and Miz Clause standing by as well as carolers from First Baptist Church. Following the tree lighting, Santa will take requests/questions from children via the “Chat” box for about 30 minutes. Let’s make the “Grinch” jealous as Santa answers all those questions from our precious kids who are anxiously awaiting Christmas Eve when Santa makes a special visit to their home.

The Gregory Construction Team in Columbus, MS has been working with Rhonda Sanders of the Community Benefit Committee to build and stock a "Free Little Pantry". This little pantry will serve the Sim Scott Park area in North Columbus. Gregory Construction’s Jay Harris built the Little Pantry and other employees in the office painted it! Yesterday, Justin and Jay Harris installed it with the help of Lowndes County Sheriff Eddie Hawkins. We were able to gather and donate food items as a team and we hope to keep this Little Pantry stocked for our community! Thank you to everyone involved!

Always remain safety conscious when you head into the woods! Here are a few ways to stay safe in tree stands:
• Always carry a cell phone and keep it on you.
• Always install/maintain tree stands with at least one other person.
• Check all your steps and straps and replace anything that is worn.
• Always properly wear a full-body harness when in a tree stand.
• Always use a rope to pull up your gun or bow.
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Never shoot towards another hunter.
• Always wear bright orange so you are visible to other hunters.

Construction is progressing on the Mercury Treatment Facility. This is a linchpin project for future cleanup at the Y-12 National Security Complex that will open the door for the demolition of large, mercury-contaminated facilities at the site.
In 2021, we are committed to safety more than ever before! We worked 345,000 man hours last year without a recordable incident, and our goal for this year is to reach 500,000.
As a step towards reaching this goal, we have increased our training efforts for both seasoned and new employees. In 2020 we started a Mentorship Program we are excited to see it progress this year. In 2021, we have started a Craft Apprenticeship Program and will offer training and certification courses for all of our employees.
With training comes knowledge, and with knowledge comes confidence. That is the confidence to begin and carry out each day safely, hold each other accountable, address issues, and ask questions.

We were honored to be a part of the renovations and additions to the Alabama Stadium completed in 2020. Our work included structural concrete improvements, decks, and hardscapes. Other changes to the stadium included new skyboxes, upgraded concessions, charging stations, and a student social area added at ground-level! The total stadium renovation work cost $107 million.

We will soon be starting a new remolding project at the Amtrak Depot in Greenwood, MS. The project involves building a 1,200 ft long passenger platform to make the building more accessible. This will bring the Amtrak station up to current ADA (Americans with Disability Act) standards.
The red brick, two-story structure was built around 1917 for $60,000. It falls within Greenwood’s Railroad Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The depot offers upscale shops, fine dining, museums, and galleries.

The horse riding trail at Lake Lowndes State Park was recently damaged in a rain storm and a creek crossing was washed out. A few local residents reached out to us to see if we could help repair the damage. Our founder's father, Roger Gregory, quickly jumped into action! He and his son in law took a few pieces of equipment and worked tirelessly to make the path ready for trail riders. 👏

Many building features that are common in older facilities such as narrow doors, a step or a round doorknob at an entrance door, or a crowded check-out or store aisle are barriers to access by people with disabilities. Happy President's Day!
Did you know? In the late 1940s, President Truman noticed that the White House (nearly 150 years old at the time) was under serious physical stress and in danger of collapse. He initiated renovations to the entire building, tearing down all of the interior walls. Crews poured 126 new reinforced concrete support columns to a depth of 25 feet. This would eventually provide space for two newly excavated sub-basement levels.

During construction work, we often open trenches and excavations to allow for new footings, piers, foundation work, and the setting of new piping and conduit. We always enforce rules and regulations on these sites to make sure all employees are safe!
These rules include documenting inspections, communicating with operators, avoiding the swing radius of operating equipment, putting up safe entryways into and out of the excavation site, and providing proper sloping.
Underground utilities could interfere with excavation operations and may create a hazardous atmosphere inside of the trench. We do proper testing, use location techniques, and monitor atmospheric levels to ensure it is safe.

When they “feel” the raised bumps on the surface, it alerts them that they need to take precautions beyond the end of the raised domes (the train track starts there). This is one step to making sure the project is ADA Compliant.
We recently installed these post-mounted mats on the railway passenger platform at the Amtrak Depot in Greenwood, MS. The owner’s inspector said that it is one of the best they have ever seen. 👏

We had a great time at our Columbus office today with a St. Patrick’s Day party and Birthday celebration! For St. Patrick’s day, we had three contests to help us get in the spirit: a joke contest, a contest to wear the most green, and a canned food drive contest.
The “Give what you ‘can’ canned food drive” winner was Beth Pless with 30 items donated to our Little Free Pantry. We had over 60 green items collected for this ongoing Gregory CARES project! 👏🥦
Hayden Peel was the big winner of the day winning our other two contests (and two $20 gift cards) with his green attire and St. Patrick’s Day joke. Congratulations!

Safety is a top priority at Gregory Construction, and maintaining good housekeeping at all of our job sites is a major focus.
Good housekeeping practices help to:
- reduce trip and slip incidents
- decrease fire hazards
- better control tools, material, and supplies
- more efficiently clean up and maintain areas
- improve productivity and morale.
Poor housekeeping hides hazards that could potentially cause incidents and injuries like getting hit by falling objects, slipping on wet floors and surfaces, and food waste attracting vermin and insects.
‼️ Slips, trips, and falls (nearly 25,000 incidents a day) account for 15% of all accidents according to the National Safety Council
🔨 Being struck by an object (which includes falling objects, machines, or equipment) accounts for 8 – 10% of fatalities annually.
🔥 Workplace fires make up about 25% of the fires that are responded to, and result in approximately 900 – 1000 injuries annually.
The level of housekeeping on the job also shows quality, ownership, and pride in the work being done!
