Mr. Jones served for over 29 years as a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation rising from street agent to the highly coveted position of Special Agent in Charge of two major FBI offices. He has acquired diverse executive management experience in Federal law enforcement developed in progressively challenging and complex assignments within the FBI. He has extensive background in conducting complex Criminal and National Security investigations, crisis management, threat analysis, and intelligence collection.
In 1999, Mr. Jones leadership qualifications led to his appointment as a member of the FBI Senior Executive Service and his selection as Section Chief, and later named as Acting Deputy Assistant Director of the Operations Branch at the Bureau’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division. His responsibilities included managing several national law enforcement information systems, including the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, the National Crime Information Center and the Automated Fingerprint Identification System. He was recognized for his efforts in transitioning the FBI from its antiquated paper fingerprint cards to the new IAFIS digital technology which significantly reduced the time to identify wanted dangerous felons thus greatly enhancing the safety of police officers nationwide.
His promotion and selection to become Special Agent in Charge of the Special Operations Division, New York Field Office, the FBI’s largest, was perhaps his most challenging assignment. Arriving in New York just three weeks before the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, he was immediately reassigned to manage aspects of that investigation. He provided executive management oversight and coordinated investigative operation of an FBI led command center which housed over 3000 FBI, state and local investigators in the hours following the attacks. A few months later his exemplary leadership skills led to his selection by FBI Director Mueller to lead a team of agents and New York City Police detectives in the investigation in New York to identify the individual responsible for mailing the Anthrax virus resulting in deaths in New York and other cities in the United States.
In 2004, Mr. Jones was promoted and selected to serve as Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Atlanta Field Office. He was directly responsible for all FBI operations in Georgia managing a team of 500 Special Agents and investigative support personnel. Mr. Jones initiated opportunities to meet and establish functional relationships with Georgia chiefs of police, sheriffs and public and private sector entities. He led a team of 1200 Special Agents providing tactical, crisis response and intelligence capabilities to protect the G-8 Summit held on St. Simons Island, Georgia in 2004. He received personal commendation from President George W. Bush , FBI Director Mueller and Georgia Governor Sony Perdue for his efforts in coordinating the FBIs response to this world event.
Mr. Jones has received numerous other awards and recognition for exceptional performance and dedicated service during his 29 year career with the FBI.
A graduate of Drake University, he is a member of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, International Association of Chiefs of Police, Metropolitan Atlanta Chiefs of Police, ASIS and the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI.
