Meet Ruby the superstar! Ruby is an 8-year-old Goldendoodle who came to see us earlier this year when her owners noticed that she was having significant trouble walking due to neurologic dysfunction. She recently came back to see us for a follow-up appointment, and she was excited to visit all of the familiar faces that aided in her recovery! Check it out!
Sweet Ellie, pictured with one of our amazing technicians, Savanna, was brought to our emergency department after being hit by a car and sustaining injuries to her pelvis that required extensive surgery to help her walk again. After Dr. Hawthorne and our emergency team stabilized her, Ellie was transferred to our Surgery & Orthopedics department where Dr. Hottinger and Dr. Allen were on the case! We are happy to report that Ellie’s surgery went well, and she is expected to make a full recovery.
Did you know that GCVS is equipped to perform life-saving blood transfusions? Blood transfusions can be needed to replenish a pet’s blood supply following illness, treatment, or surgery. GCVS is fortunate to have in-house donor cats, like BB (pictured), to provide emergency blood. BB is single-handedly responsible for saving three lives! Our donor cats live with us in a relaxing custom cat room and receive top-notch medical care while under our roof. Not to mention all the TLC that they receive daily, since they’re “owned” by all 300+ employees! After a few years as donors, the cats are adopted out to the "purrfect" home. We have had over 10 successful adoptions since the program started!

Thank you, GCVS team, for all that you do!
Our team understands the importance of practicing high-quality medicine and compassionate care, because most of us have been clients ourselves! April, one of our talented cardiology technicians, recently brought in her regal Great Dane, Trillian, to see our Internal Medicine department. We are proud to treat each patient as if they were one of our own pets, and every now and then, they actually are one of our own pets!
Congratulations are in order! We are pleased to announce that one of our amazing technicians, Marisa, recently completed our chemotherapy training program! This rigorous program reviews chemotherapy drugs, their administration, associated toxicities, and important safety precautions. It is this level of advanced training that allows the GCVS oncology team to provide the highest level of care to each and every patient. In honor of National Cat Day, we'd like to introduce Lobo! Lobo and his adoption mate were playing on the second floor, when Lobo slipped through the railing, landing on the first floor and fractured his back. Lobo was brought to GCVS where he met with GCVS surgeon, Dr. Hudson, and GCVS neurologist, Dr. Jennings. Lobo's spine was stabilized with the use of a splint, and he was evaluated for neurologic damage, which can often be caused by back trauma. In order to maintain Lobo's mobility and strengthen his hindlimbs, Lobo began rehabilitation at home with with a customized exercise program until his splint could be removed. Lobo then progressed to outpatient therapy with our Rehabilitation & Fitness team. And the rest is history! Lobo's owner recently reported that Lobo is fearlessly running around and playing with his adoption mate! Check out this snapshot of his road to recovery! 🐱 🐈

Macy is a VERY special surgery patient who started coming to GCVS over a year ago for help with her elbow hygromas (fluid-filled swelling) that had abscessed. For the past 17 months, Macy has been coming to GCVS twice a week for bandage changes and laser therapy. She is the perfect patient and knows her routine so well that she practically puts herself on the exam table and lays on her side, waiting for us to change her bandage. If she had thumbs, she would probably change the bandage herself! Macy’s primary care veterinarian will soon be taking over much of Macy’s care, so wanted to ensure that all of Macy’s time spent at GCVS was documented. Recently, Macy was made an honorary surgery team member! We look forward to seeing her back for her next “shift.” Don’t forget to clock-in, Macy!
Happy Halloween from GCVS! Our team got into the spirit with a Halloween department decorating competition and a pumpkin carving contest for the ages! Some staff members dressed their pets in fun costumes, while others got innovative with their masks. Check out a few of our favorite pictures! 🎃

The safety of our patients, clients, and staff is of the utmost importance. Check out these photos of people in cat masks and a cat in a people mask to serve as your friendly reminder that masks are required inside of our hospital. 🐈
Happy Veterans Day to those who have served and continue to serve, both two and four-legged! 🇺🇸
Poppy is a YOUNG 12-year-old patient in our Rehabilitation and Fitness department! She is currently being treated for hip dysplasia and spondylosis (osteoarthritis in the hips and spine) and comes in twice a week for underwater treadmill therapy, therapeutic laser, and core strengthening exercises. All of these modalities help keep Poppy strong and pain-free! Great job, Poppy!
Here's a happy face to brighten your Friday! Meet Cookie, a dermatology patient, who couldn't have been happier during her visit!
Meet ⭐️ Compassion-First Pet Hospitals ⭐️ Kudos recipient, Britney Slabe! Britney is one of our amazing veterinary technicians. She was nominated by GCVS oncologist, Dr. Kimberly Alexander Coleman, for exemplifying the core value of Kindness. 💚 "Her compassion for our patients, clients, and fellow staff members is clearly evident in her every action. No matter how frustrating a situation can become, her patience and kindness never waivers. She always takes the time to be gentle with all of her patients which is especially important in geriatric cancer patients who have to come to the hospital frequently for treatment which can be very scary." Meet the Extern: Connor “My name is Connor, and I am a local Houstonian finishing my 4th year of veterinary school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My love for animals started in second grade when I went to summer camp at the Houston Zoo. This passion continued throughout my life. As an undergrad at Texas A&M, I founded a not-for-profit 501(c)3 called “Warriors of the Wild” that visited different Houston area elementary schools to teach kids about animal conservation. Now, as a senior veterinary student, my fervor for saving animals has only grown, and I am excited to be here at GCVS in their two-week externship program with the opportunity to shadow the top veterinary specialists in the country. Thank you, GCVS, for helping me turn my passion for animals into a career helping them!” – Connor Jacobson 4th Year Veterinary Student University of Wisconsin - Madison, College of Veterinary Medicine
Meet the Extern: Carrisa “As a 4th-year veterinary student during the COVID-19 pandemic, this possibility to extern with the GCVS Anesthesia department was an amazing opportunity. GCVS is an excellent environment to grow veterinary knowledge. The veterinarians, technicians, and staff work in concert to provide gold-standard veterinary care. I would love to extern at GCVS again." – Carrisa Thomas 4th Year Veterinary Student Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine
Education is a founding principle of GCVS. We are proud to offer externships to veterinary students to provide firsthand exposure to specialty medicine outside of the university setting. Externships provide students with a variety of training styles and perspectives, and recently, this clinical experience has become exceedingly important with many veterinary schools temporarily closing. Externships typically range from 2 to 4 weeks, and each student (“extern”) receives one-on-one mentorship from a specialist. At the end of the program, the extern is evaluated and GCVS is asked to provide feedback to the university so they can assign a grade. GCVS is proud to shape the future of veterinary medicine, one student at a time!
ATTN VETERINARIANS & TECHNICIANS: Do you still need CE? Good news! There’s still time to attend our FREE virtual symposium; Now approved by both RACE® and the TBVME for both veterinarians and technicians! All lectures are available at your convenience, including an Opioid & Substance Abuse lecture that meets new license renewal requirements to practice veterinary medicine. Meet Ripp, a stunning working dog! This picture doesn't show it, but Ripp sustained a complete tear of his left cranial cruciate ligament (equates to a human ACL) and broke his left tibia. His owners were concerned that Ripp's injuries may not allow him to do what he loves best, but luckily Dr. Corbin was on the case! A little over 2 months later, Ripp is feeling better and back doing what he loves best!
This is Bonnie, a 7-month-old British shorthair cat that came to see us after falling 2 stories. Ouch! Bonnie had a left femoral neck fracture that was surgically repaired by Dr. Hudson. She recently came in for her two-week recheck, and we are thrilled to report that she is doing wonderfully at home!
GCVS is committed to educating the next generation of veterinary specialists. Dr. Daniel Jardes, one of our board-certified veterinary internists, helped to educate our recent externs and shared his thoughts on the program: “When you become a veterinarian, you are signing up to be a student for the rest of your career. Just as we seek to teach what we know to our externs we also learn from them. All our Internists took part in externships when we were in veterinary school, and we aim to pay back those invaluable experiences to future generations. GCVS is one of the largest veterinary hospitals in the world and with that comes the responsibility to advance our profession. We do this through how we practice every day. The education we provide our externs ensures this impact shapes the future of veterinary medicine.”
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin Dr. Rebecca Salazar, one of our board-certified anesthesiologists, took a moment to share her thoughts on the GCVS externship program: “I enjoy participating in the externship program as it allows me to help educate the future. Anesthesia is such an important part of any type of practice. The proclivity of shaping future veterinarians and giving them a zest for anesthesia is my primary goal.”

GCVS is honored to partner with local rescue organizations in the Greater Houston Area. Meet Natsuki, a Shepherd mix that was brought in by Mutts & Meows Rescue for hip surgery. Our amazing surgeons, Dr. Allen and Dr. Hudson performed a successful surgery, but not before Natsuki received some pre-op TLC from our team! 😍
While our surgeons typically treat cats and dogs, their advanced training and skillsets translate to patients of all sizes! Recently, Dr. Grayson Cole was contacted about Stella, a sand tiger shark with a spinal luxation, at the Mississippi Aquarium! Dr. Cole said, "This is an injury that we treat with surgery in dogs and cats but the surgery had never been done before in a shark. The shark was not doing well with medical management, and we needed to intervene. Since Gulfport is only a 6-hour drive from Houston, I was able to drive in. We were fortunate enough to receive donated plates and screws from our colleagues in human orthopedics, and we assembled a team. I'm honored to have been able to participate in such a unique case, and Stella is still doing well." Click the link below to learn more about the incredible shark surgery and Dr. Cole's contributions! https://bit.ly/2W168eN
At GCVS, we like to get into the holiday spirit whenever possible, and that includes GCVS Bandage Art for our clients who require a cast or splint! Our amazing Surgery Operating Room Assistants, Andrea Gutierrez, and Catherine Melton created custom bandage art featuring the GCVS logo! The Grinch (pictured below) was created by Peppe Chiang, one of our talented Operating Room Technicians. The smile these small touches bring to our client's faces is what makes our season bright!
At GCVS, the holiday season isn't just a chance to celebrate; it's an opportunity to make a difference in the Veterinary Community. GCVS is proud to present The GCVS Giving Tree. The GCVS Giving Tree is an opportunity for you to help GCVS make a difference in rescue animals' lives that need medical attention. We have many pets rescued and treated by our specialists here at GCVS, and a donation of any amount is hugely appreciated! Choose an ornament from the tree with the name of your choice's rescue and bring it to the front desk to make your donation! Please email Wecare@gcvs.com for more information about contributing via the web.
Here's a happy face to brighten your Friday! BB, one of our beloved Donor Cats, is posing next to some of the many gifts he can't wait to unwrap.
⭐️ Meet Louie! ⭐️ Louie, pictured here with the talented Dr. Jennings, came to GCVS with a one-month history of progressive rear limb weakness/ataxia. (not using his back legs for 2-3 weeks) The neurology exam found a lesion affecting his spinal cord in the middle of his back. An MRI showed severe compression of the spinal cord with a herniated disc between the 2nd & 3rd lumbar vertebrae. Louie was taken to surgery to decompress his spinal cord and remove the free disc material in the canal comprising the cord. The surgery went great! He recovered and was WALKING the morning after surgery, and went home 48 hours after his initial visit! GCVS is proud to make a difference in the Houston veterinary community!
🎀 Meet Pearl 🎀 Pearl is beloved in our Surgery Department. In September, Pearl had a left medial patellar luxation repair and distal femoral osteotomy with Dr. Corbin. She came in this week for her final recheck with radiographs to ensure that the surgery has completely healed. Dr. Corbin then examined her mobility before clearing Pearl for return to regular activity at home! We love to see our work help improve the quality of life in our patients; and it brings us joy to see our patients progress and go back to their happy selves! #WeCare #GCVS

GCVS wants to send best wishes to Daisy! 🎉 Daisy, is celebrating being cancer-free, thanks in part to the GCVS Medical Oncology team. Daisy's family just sent us an update and wanted to share how great she is doing. "Daisy is doing really well. You wouldn't know she's ten years old at all, let alone fought bone cancer this last year. Who knows what the future will hold, but we are so grateful for the loving and excellent care she has and is receiving from GCVS." Daisy was referred to the GCVS Medical Oncology team to treat a growth discovered to be bone cancer. After five months of treatment, Daisy celebrated her 10th birthday "pawty" at home with her loving family. Meet Bronx, a patient who saw THREE of our departments and won a tough battle for his life! Bronx was brought in to see Dr. Jennings in our neurology department when his owners discovered he could not walk. With anesthesiologist Dr. Salazar's help, Bronx received an MRI that showed severe compression of the cervical spinal cord and indicated that both the motor pathways and critical respiration pathways were compromised. Next, Bronx underwent neurosurgery to remove the compressive disc material. Due to his injury, Bronx needed help breathing, and our Emergency & Critical Care team worked quickly to set up a ventilator. Over the next week, Bronx battled aspiration pneumonia and transient diabetes, but he wasn't ready to give up, and neither were we! Finally, Bronx received LASER therapy with our Rehabilitation & Fitness team and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) treatments to treat his pneumonia and spinal cord injury. Just eight days later, Bronx walked to greet his owners (albeit wobbly), with a wagging tail and lots of licks! GCVS would like to recognize all of the hard work and interdepartmental collaborations that made this story possible. GCVS is a community-based hospital that provides specialty and emergency care for the greater Houston area. Check out this fantastic story! ❤️ #GCVS #GCVStrong #veterinary #veterinaryhospital

Meet Mr. Snoopi, one of the newest graduates from the Rehabilitation & Fitness Department. WAY TO GO, SNOOPI! 🐾 After having a spinal surgery with one of our very talented Neurosurgeons, Dr. Giovanella, Snoopi began treatments with our Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioners, Kristina Adourian. As part of his recovery, Kristina tailored an at-home exercise regimen to work in conjunction with an in-hospital rehabilitation program to get Snoopi up and walking again. We are proud to report he has graduated from his custom program and can now return to regular activity at home with his loving family. GCVS takes pride in having provided comprehensive care to Snoopi during and after his spinal surgery. #GCVS #WeCare

In honor of National Golden Retriever Day, we are sharing an update of Scarlett, a retriever with a heart of gold. Scarlett had an unfortunate event at 2 days old, which caused trauma to the right forelimb, and starting at 2 ½ weeks old, she has had routine visits with one of the GCVS orthopedists. As she grew, it was determined that she would not need surgery (yay!), and she would be able to live a normal, happy life. Since she would benefit from using a prosthetic on her affected leg, Scarlett has been under the care of both her GCVS orthopedist and the amazing Bill Bickley at Pet Artificial Limbs and Supports. GCVS is proud to have provided Scarlett with Care since she was a puppy, and now, at the age of 1.5, Scarlett is living her best life. Check out Scarlett enjoying posing for the camera and enjoying time with her loving family. #GCVS #WeCare

Meet ⭐️ Compassion-First Pet Hospitals Kudos recipient, Nancy Petru, one of our fantastic ICU technicians. "Being a critical care technician for animals can be overwhelming and thankless. However, even on the days when I'm exhausted and frustrated to the point of tears, it's worth it. Providing compassionate nursing care gives me deep satisfaction and the opportunity to grow my empathy and become a better human. I love your pets so much. I love them when they're cute and naughty, when they're aggressive and painful, and when they're gross and miserable. Every shift, I try my best to pay forward the selfless love my pets have given me. Vet techs genuinely love your animals. We take our role as their advocate very seriously. In the absolute dumpster fire that has been 2020, I am grateful to be working with compassionate folks who love animals as much as I do." -Nancy Click the link below to read more amazing Kudos recipients. https://bit.ly/2YSYdlp

"Excellence in veterinary care, dedicated to the people & pets of Houston," that's what #GCVStrong is all about, and the events of last week prove #TeamGCVS exemplifies just that. As Houston faced extreme weather and historic power outages across the state, GCVS staff continued to provide care to all of our patients by partnering with the community of veterinary hospitals in the Houston area. VERGI and Westbury Animal Hospital answered our call and volunteered to provide services to the pets entrusted to GCVS. The GCVS team worked alongside theirs and shared supplies to provide continued emergency services proving that community-based collaborations make the Houston pet community vibrant. GCVS is proud to have collaborated with Vergi 24/7 and Westbury Animal Hospital - Compassionate Care and Commitment 24 hrs a Day as we faced extreme inclement weather, and thanks to these great partners, we provided uninterrupted veterinary services to the Houston pets entrusted in our care. Check out the GCVS staff working hard to transport these pets safely. #GCVS #CommunityBasedCare

It makes our day to receive a 5-star review like this one! "I just moved back to Houston and was living in an extended stay hotel when my nine-year-old Shih Tzu passed away unexpectedly on a Sunday. I was at a loss and didn't know what to do since I did not have a new vet yet. I called my former vet's office, and the service referred me to GCVS. When I called them, the person on the phone was just what I needed as I broke down in tears. They were so kind and compassionate as they told me what to do. When I arrived, the vet tech who came to take my little dog was just as kind and compassionate as he asked my dog's name while he gently wrapped him in a blanket. I wish I could do more to thank the staff than write this review, but I am just so grateful they were there for me." - Kelly C.

The GCVS Ophthalmology Department wanted to share a recent experience they had with one of their clients. "Meet Choco Rhea. After a long-fought battle of lens luxation with glaucoma, we performed a bilateral enucleation. Choco's mom is in the military overseas and left Choco with us two weeks after her enucleation for short-term medical boarding. Over this time, Choco became our little mascot and spent time with us in the ophthalmology area. Our Medical Oncology team would even visit with her a few times due to how amazing she is. Our IMC team even got her some treats to give her while she was in our care. Her mother even surprised us by sending baked goods and telling us how grateful she is for our hard work. Finally, on Choco's last day, we took a picture and said our farewells. GCVS is proud to have administered medical care to Choco and is glad she is home with her mother, who serves in her country with pride." We salute Dr. Pierson and her talented staff for administering care to Choco Rhea and ensuring her mother didn't have to worry about her post-operative care while serving overseas.
