We just wrapped up a fun project in Columbus, Ohio. This sprawling ranch has a hip roof (gutters all the way around the house) with 6” gutters and a cedar shake roof. There a many large Oaks, Walnuts, Maples and Pines on the property. The homeowners selected MasterShield micro mesh gutter guards to keep out all leaves, pine needles and debris. It may work, but the problem we identified for this homeowner is that the metal drip edge (the metal strip below the shingles) was installed incorrectly. It sits too tight against the fascia board. When water wicks under the shingles, it rolls down the drip edge, onto the fascia board, and behind the gutter.

Besides defeating the purpose of the gutters, this issue can cause serious water issues around your foundation, in your basement or crawl space, and it will cause wood rot.

Anytime it snows, our website and email box light up with inquiries about icicles forming on gutters. Many homeowners have never seen icicles hanging from their gutters.
This photo shows how as snow melts off the roof, the water refreezes on top of the gutter. Since this section of gutter has an open end (done on purpose), you can also see the water that drained under the ice and into the gutter before it refroze.
People believe that once the gutter guard surface freezes, water cannot enter the gutter and all the water will spill over the edge of the gutters, forming icicles.
