"To say this year has been difficult is an understatement. As a nurse, I want to help and support others but I have realized that my mental health is important, too. Some days I need to step away by myself and feel my feelings and regroup. I may head outside to see the beauty in nature, watch the sunrise or sunset, snuggle with my dog or escape with a book on the porch. I have found these times help me to continue to see the good in others and to find the positive in each day."

A community member organized a diaper drive to benefit the Beverly Hospital's Connecting Young Moms program that supports young mothers and their children. This year, our community donated 52 total boxes of diapers for a total of 4,198 individual diapers and 744 individual wipes! Thank you so much to everyone who participated!

Eunice Yuyun, LHMC Pharmacist, and Heather Laurie, Beverly Hospital Nurse, are a part of a group of 76 healthcare heroes from New England that were randomly selected for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the big game this weekend! 🏈 This trip was organized as a way to thank healthcare workers for their dedication throughout the pandemic and to spread the message on the importance of getting vaccinated.

Who is #RebeccaLeeCrumpler?
Dr. Crumpler was the first Black woman to receive a medical degree. Dr. Crumpler received her MD in 1864 at the New England Female Medical College, right in Boston. She was the only black student in her school. Little information remains of Dr. Crumpler’s legacy, but she stands out as a local medical hero to this day.

Who was #Onesimus?
A slave from Boston who introduced inoculation to his slave owner, Cotton Mather. The information Onesimus shared with Mather would later prove extremely useful during a smallpox outbreak in Boston. During his talks with Onesimus, Mather learned that back in his African homeland (the exact location is unknown), he was injected with a small amount of smallpox and was later found to be immune to the disease.

Who is #HenriettaLacks?
While receiving treatment for cervical cancer, cervix cells were harvested by medical providers without Lacks’ consent. These cells, known as HeLa cells, were called “immortal cells” and have contributed to notable breakthroughs in medicine, including a vaccine for polio. It took 2 decades for her family to be notified.
As healthcare institutions strive towards regaining the trust amongst our Black communities, we honor Henrietta Lacks' contribution to this #MedicalMoment in #BlackHistory.

Dr. Carter was a protégé of Alois Alzheimer, the German doctor responsible for beginning the research of degenerative brain diseases. The first clinical review of Alzheimer’s cases recorded up to that time was published by Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller in 1904.
It was Dr. Carter's work that catapulted the search for a cure to Alzheimer's. We celebrate his contribution to this #MedicalMoment in #BlackHistory.

We're grateful to have the wisdom and talent of Juanita Prescod, Infection Preventionist, on our teams at Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals. Her inspiration to work in healthcare comes from Black people in history that have transformed medicine, frequently unknowingly or unwillingly.
“Did you know that the tissue samples from the cervical cancer cells of Henrietta Lacks led to the creation of the HeLa cell line which is still used today for medical research? For over 40 years black men infected with syphilis were left untreated under the guise of receiving free health care? Dr. Sims (the father of modern Gynecology) experimented and perfected techniques on black female slaves without the use of anesthesia?
Many medical advancements for the betterment of mankind were made possible by Black people, often without their consent.”
