Suffering loneliness, sorrow and fright
Entering battle with courage and might
Saving the world from dictators of evil intent
Defending the weak from oppression and descent
Brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice
To ensure freedom and sovereignty despite the price
Sometimes sent to obscure countries for reasons less clear
Yet obedient and courageous despite their fear
Some never return to live fulfilling lives
Bringing eternal sadness to mothers and wives
We honor our soldiers and lift up their names
Bestowing medals with fleeting fanfare and fame
We can never forget what they did for those safe at home
Yet we know God will grant them an eternal dome.

You spread a deadly virus that disrupted families and killed so many innocent people
You divided our people and undermined our country
You revealed a racism we thought was of the past
You brought suffering and misery to millions of our brothers and sisters
You showed us a Christianity that resembled nothing we had been given or taught
You revealed leaders who lied and did not care
You made us anxious, lonely and angry
Yet you also showed the best in us through brave doctors and nurses, teachers, scientists and caregivers who did not give up
And we have prevailed with perseverance and hope
Our faith is alive and well
We know we are headed for better times
And our gratitude for life and each other is intact
As we thank God for a New Year!
