According to the inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security, in July 2018, migrant children were forced to wait in vans, sometimes overnight, before reuniting with their parents. 73 migrant children were placed into vans in in the parking lot of a Texas ICE detention facility, for a timespan ranging from 10-41 hours. October 11 was officially National Coming Out Day in the United States. The pandemic has made the process of coming out more trying for individuals. According to a poll, “more than 40 percent of LGBTQ youth reported that the Covid-19 pandemic had affected their ability to express their LGBTQ identity”.
The Trevor Project, which serves as a 24/7 suicide hotline for LGBTQ youth, has reported that the amount of calls coming through has doubled since the onset of the pandemic. This is most likely due to the fact that many youth moved back home in response to the pandemic, which does not universally serve as a welcoming environment for youth.

As the presidential election approaches, it is reported that ICE has arrested upwards of 100 immigrants in California. The arrests were made in order to tackle the lack of cooperation between federal agents and police force in immigration enforcement matters. Throughout much of the COVID-19 pandemic, ICE had mostly halted sizable operations. However, in late September, their website indicated that they would plan on resuming enforcement as usual.

Seven official border crossings meant to process all immigrants halted the processing of asylum seekers. These individuals were directed to other ports, with some of the ports being more than 30 miles away. The report says, “We observed CBP officers telling aliens the port was at capacity and did not have the capability to process them, regardless of actual capacity and capability at the time.”

In a divorce, property is divided into marital vs. non-marital property, and only marital property is split. Many states divide marital property according to “equitable distribution” which means that it is split “equitably” or fairly, after considering numerous factors. Wisconsin however, divides marital property according to “community property.” This means that marital property is split down the middle, 50/50.
If you need help maneuvering marital property disputes in Wisconsin or need help creating a marital agreement to opt out of the marital property law, contact Hanna, Brandt & Lucsay, LLP. We routinely help our clients reach satisfactory outcomes in family law matters.
