The time is now for women everywhere-including you-to understand how midwives partner with women to improve their health throughout their lives. The skills of midwives and their expert knowledge of women's health care are often overlooked. Many people don't realize how highly educated today's nurse midwives are, or think that midwives are only knowledgeable about childbearing. But providing care and guidance through pregnancy and childbirth is just part of the range of services offered by midwives. Many midwives can provide care for women of all ages-from teenage years through menopause and beyond. In fact, many women visit a midwife for women's health needs before, during, and after pregnancy. This is one of the unknown truths about midwifery.A Certified Nurse Midwife is educated in the two disciplines of nursing and midwifery. Laurie graduated in 1977 with her BS as an RN, worked in labor and delivery at LDS Hospital for 17 years, then in 1994 obtained her Master's of Science at the U of U in midwifery, working as a CNM since. She is board certified, and has consulting obstetrician physicians that she works closely with. Laurie states, "When it comes time to choose the type of delivery you desire, I will facilitate the labor and delivery process from start to finish. My goal is to support and nurture you throughout your pregnancy, labor and birth, whether you choose a natural birth or one assisted by pain medications or epidural anesthesia. I am committed to treating each patient with the utmost respect, care and sensitivity".Laurie encourages skin to skin bonding by delivering the baby to the mother's chest, and she encourages breast feeding as soon as the baby desires. She waits for the umbilical cord to quit pulsating before cutting. Healthy babies (which are most babies) don't leave their mother's arms, and couplet care (where babies and moms stay together) is routine for all families. Some mothers and fathers like to assist the birth by touching the baby as he/she joins this world.According to research conducted among women who choose certified nurse midwives for their birthing experience, there are fewer low-weight babies, fewer cesarean sections and a lower rate of episiotomies.
