The test used for measuring the hardness of wood (whether it's classified as hard or soft) is the Janka Hardness Test. All wood used in flooring is subjected to this test and rated accordingly.
Exotic hardwoods aren't just for main living areas, they can be installed in bathrooms and kitchens. Teak, and other tightly grained, high resin woods, have been used for outdoor furniture for years, and they transition nicely to indoor wet areas.
If you are unsure if solid or engineered wood flooring is right for your home, you will want to consider the humidity level of the room. Engineered wood flooring is known to better withstand high humidity.
Moving into a new home with hardwood floors? If they are worse for wear, let us refinish them beforehand. Allow at least two to three weeks to complete the project and for the finish to dry completely.
Hardwood floors can only be refinished so many times. If the flooring is tongue and groove, it can be no thinner than 1/32” above the joint. Once this is reached, the flooring must be replaced.
Pre-finished hardwood floors have minimal maintenance requirements. Factory-finished products are harder and more durable, they can be swept with a broom, and they do not require dangerous chemicals when cleaning.
