Hawaii is the only 1 out of all 50 states that has two officially recognized languages, English and Hawaiian. The Hawaiian language was recognized as an official language in 1978 amidst concerns by then Governor John Waihee that the ability to read old property records, originally written in Hawaiian, would be lost, and that these documents would not be able to be enforced. The timing of this change also coincided with a widespread movement throughout the State to perpetuate native Hawaiian culture and language. With the help of Hawaiian immersion schools and other programs and classes, the number of people able to speak, read and understand the Hawaiian language continues to grow today. #hawaiian #English #pidgin #hawaiianslang #hawaiiana
Bette Midler, who is an American singer, songwriter, actress, author, and comedian, was born in Honolulu in 1945. Her career spans half a century, and she has won numerous awards including Golden Globes, Grammy's, Emmy's, and even a Tony award. When she was born in Hawaii, her family was one of the few Jewish families in a mostly Asian community. Her dad worked as a painter at a Navy base in Hawaii, and her mom was a seamstress and housewife. She attended high school in Honolulu and went onto the University of Hawaii at Manoa where she majored in drama. She worked as an extra in the film Hawaii, where she played a seasick passenger named Miss David Buff. It was not until 1965 that she relocated from Hawaii to New York and landed her first professional onstage role. #bettemidler #famoushawaiians #honolulu #universityofhawaii #Manoa
Hawaii has thousands of plants and animals that live on the islands, but it only has one native land mammal: the Hawaiian Hoary Bat. All other mammals on the island were brought to the islands by humans. Like many other species of bats, the Hawaiian Hoary Bat is brown but they also have a silver frosted fur on the back of their back, ears, and neck. They travel and hunt individually, and because of their solitary characteristics there is very limited knowledge on the life history of the Hawaiian Hoary Bat. They prey on a wide variety of insects, including moths, beetles, crickets, mosquitos, termites, and many other insects as well. #hawaii #nativeanimals #hawaiianhoarybat #hoarybat
The first surfing references were found on cave paintings in Polynesia, but the Polynesians brought surfing to Hawaii and it immediately went viral! It was not only considered a sport to natives, but was a very important part of Hawaiian culture. Religious rituals were practiced during the process of shaping surf boards, which served as protection rituals to secure the gods well-being. Everybody from men to women and even children were allowed to surf, but there were regulations placed on who was allowed to swim at certain spots #surfing #hawaiiansurfers #hawaiiana #hawaiianapropertymanagement #hawaiiproperties
Happy Statehood Day! For those who don't know, Statehood Day, previously known as Admissions Day, is celebrating the third Friday in August every year. It is celebrated to commemorate Hawaii's admission as a state which occurred on August 21, 1959. The Statehood bill was approved by Congress and residents voted 94% in support to have Hawaii admitted into the Union as a state. On the third Friday in August in 1959, President Eisenhower signed a proclamation making Hawaii the 50th state of the United States of America #statehoodday #50thstate #hawaii #hawaiiana #propertymanagement
Diamond Head State Monument is one of Hawaii's most popular landmarks among all of the islands! It is known for its historic hiking trail and military history. It encompasses over 475 acres of beautiful views and has a hiking trail that can be enjoyed by even beginners. Unfortunately Diamond Head is current closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, but hopefully can be enjoyed by natives and visitors alike in the near future #DiamondHead #StateMonuments #Hawaiiana #Propertymanagement #hikingtrails

The Hawaiian Monk Seal is one of the many endangered species in Hawaii. They are known as ʻIlio-holo-i-ka-uaua, or "dog that runs in rough water," and are unique compared to other seals since they live in tropical climate instead of frigid waters. They are on the brink of extinction most likely due to malnutrition and predation. Tiger, great white, and Galapagos sharks are all predators of the Hawaiian Monk Seal. Their average life span is 25 to 30 years, and can grow up to 7 to 8 feet long. The females are usually larger than the males, and tend to be more aggressive especially when protecting their newborns. If you are lucky enough to see a Hawaiian Monk Seal, make sure to keep a safe distance since they should not be touched since they are considered an endangered species. #hawaiiana#Hawaii #endangeredspecies #monkseals #seals

Lucky for us, our Hawaiian skies are unpolluted and without smog. We do experience vog however, thanks to Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanos, which has been erupting off and on since 1983. While the volcanic haze is not as dangerous as smog for most people, it can cause eyes to burn and irritation to those with respiratory issues. But did you know that there is also an up-side to vog? Vog can magnify the sun and moon, making them look huge and orange, providing an extraordinary sunset! #vog #nosmog #clearhawaiiair #cleanair #breathecleanair #nopollutioninhawaii
Night Marchers are said to be the ghosts of old Hawaiian warriors, and have been rumored to travel at night near places where battles took place or places of worship. Those who live near the paths of the Night Marchers claim they can hear the sounds of drumming and conch shells blowing at night. Those who claim to have actually seen them say they have no legs but travel in military formations. The stories of the Night Marchers claim that if you make eye contact with one of them, they will take you with them to the spirit world. One must lay belly down on the ground to show respect and avoid being taken to join the Night Marchers in the spirit world. #hawaii #oldfolktales #oldhawaiianstories #nightmarchers #hawaiianwarriors
According to Hawaiian folk tales, you should not carry any pork or pork products over the Pali Highway (Route 61) which is located on the island of Oahu. Those who ignore the advice to not carry pork over the Pali highway have had their cars stall out and refuse to start until the pork was taken out of the car. There are many variations to this tale, but many believe it stems from an old love feud between the goddess of fire, Pele, and the pig-man god named Kamapuaa. There are also other variations that mention other highways, such as Saddle Road on the Big Island. #nopork #hawaiiana #PaliHighway #folktales #oldfolktales #didyouknow
