The Truth about Hearing Loss and Cognitive Decline
By David Hough, PhD, CCC-A
Human beings are relations creatures….my wife constantly reminds me of this. I remind her that my cognitive impairment certainly affects my ability to communicate😊. Cognition involves mental abilities related to attention, memory, and processing information.
For years, medical research has understood the significant correlation between cognitive decline and untreated hearing loss. A recent LANCET (August 08, 2020) article condensed information from numerous studies and offered the following conclusions:
• Controlling for age, if a group of hearing loss patients are left with untreated hearing loss, they have a significant greater risk of cognitive decline than that of normal hearing individuals, matched for age.
• Too, if a group of patients with hearing loss goes untreated, then cognitive decline is significantly greater than a group of patients with similar hearing loss that have been treated with amplification in the form of hearing aids.
• Hearing aids will NOT prevent cognitive decline. However, there are certain lifestyle factors that may be altered by an individual treated medically that significantly affect the time of onset and rate of progression of diseases associated with cognitive decline. Factors such as, education, smoking, diet, hypertension, and excessive alcohol consumption. But untreated hearing loss is the factor that shows the greatest effect on cognitive decline with hearing rehabilitation in the form of hearing aids, which offers excellent remediation.
If untreated hearing loss can affect cognitive decline, it follows that verbal communication is an important ingredient to maintaining cognitive function, human beings are truly relational creatures.
So, I remind myself to share life with my wife…. not simply offering companionship, but observing, listening and sharing verbally, even if I’m a little slow and boring😊.
