“We have a very special flag flying over the Heartland Building this autumn. I want to tell you the story about it. You may notice it’s a little larger than the usual flag. That is because it is a flag made for burial of a veteran at a veteran's cemetery. The flag is customarily given to the family after the burial with Military Honors. My Dad's flag is on the mantle of my waiting room.

The flag flying over the Heartland Building was the burial flag of Open Burge. He was from Mankato, Minnesota and lived from 1902-1982. Pvt. Burge served during World War One in the European Theatre. He came home alive from that very costly war, but with his lungs permanently damaged from exposure to mustard gas. He suffered with decreased lung ability until his death in 1982.

I bought this at a sale. It was cheap, these things don’t sell for much these days. I saw that it was a burial flag, and the man holding the sale turned out to be the great grandson of Pvt. Burge from Mankato. I offered to buy an oak case for the flag, as I did for my Dad and my Father-in-law. The young man said there was no way there would be room for it in the new place he was moving to. So we honor that flag and the memory of Pvt. Burge, who sacrificed his health for the rest of his life on a foreign shore for the sake of these United States.”
