A client of mine asks each day “What are we going to do today?” I invariable think of the cartoon Pinky and the Brain – two laboratory mice. Pinky asks the same question and Brain answers “TRY AND TAKE OVER THE WORLD!” So I answer him “TRY AND TAKE OVER THE WORLD!” He normally smiles not knowing what in the world I am talking about (which is probably true for most everyone). But today is different, wearing masks has soured him. His response “WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO THAT? WHO WANTS IT?”

We had a client, I will call him David (cause that was his name) who had trouble walking but loved to go out to eat. I took him one fine day to the Chicken and Pickle, downtown Kansas City. After munching on great chicken and watching others pickle balling, we exited to the parking lot. David’s gait was slow as we crossed the short distance to the car. A couple of nice, pretty ladies pulled up to us and asked if we needed a ride getting somewhere. I said no, thank you, the car was just a few more feet ahead. When we reached the car, David turned and said “What were you thinking? Two pretty ladies offering us a ride and you turned it down!” I stood dumbfounded. He continued, “I’m like your little puppy dog in the park.”

OK, 2020 has sucked. Dumpster fire. Train wreck. You name it – a turkey. Now Thanksgiving. I’m not old enough to know first-hand, but the first Thanksgiving wasn’t in great times. They were Thankful times. Grandma said on thanksgiving she was thankful she wasn’t a turkey. We can all be thankful for something, especially for our own seniors. Feeling a little “loco” lately? Having to get up with someone in the middle of the night? Using a bed alarm – waking the entire house? Cut out the loco with some motion – detection. We have been using motion detectors – pitched the bed alarms. A lot less false alarms – more snoozing by everyone. Many options out there in motion detection. Transferring your loved one from bed to wheelchair to whatever, can be a challenge. Technique is important, and there are many videos on proper technique. But most important, is equipment. If you have to lift more than 40 pounds of your loved ones weight, a commercial lift is needed. Your back, their body, could otherwise be in jeopardy. There are many types on the market. Would you rather spend your money for No Pain or at the doctor’s office?
