About

Dr. Hecker & Associates was the first private Audiology practice in Virginia, established in 1974 by Dr. Henry Hecker. The practice has been at the cutting edge of technology since its inception being the first practice in Virginia to perform ENG evaluations to help diagnose balance disorders and the first to fit digital hearing aids. In addition to utilizing the latest technology to diagnose and treat hearing disorders, Dr. Hecker & Associates prides themselves on their patient centered approach. Every staff member is committed to providing the best and most personalized service to every patient that walks through door. This fact is proven by the consistently high marks our patients give us on satisfaction surveys. How does streaming work with hearing aids? Hearing aids facilitate streaming either directly or through a clip. In direct streaming, audio is transmitted right to your devices — without an accessory. The clip method uses a wireless accessory — a streamer — that clips to your clothing or may hang around your neck. Audio is transmitted to the clip, which then sends it to your hearing aids. CHECK OUT OUR LATEST BLOG ABOUT STREAMING DURING THE HOLIDAYS! https://www.drhecker.com/5-sounds-to-stream-for-holidays/ DRHECKER.COM 5 Sounds to Stream Through Your Hearing Aids for the Holidays

FALLS: MORE SERIOUS THAN YOU MIGHT THINK An estimated 646,000 individuals each year die from falls. Nearly all hip fractures — over 95% — are attributable to falls. Over 37 million nonfatal falls each year are severe enough to require medical attention. Balance disorders are big contributors to falls among seniors, who suffer the most fall-related fatalities. Reduce your risk with these five tips: Get your vision checked, making sure you’re seeing your best. Be sure to understand how any medications may affect you, including your balance. Check your surroundings for hazards such as uneven surfaces, slippery floors, small rugs, or unstable handrails. Help ensure your loved ones and those with disabilities have a safe environment adapted to their physical needs. Keep your hearing in top shape, starting with hearing exams once a year and whenever you’re having trouble understanding — especially if you’re having difficulty while dining out, watching TV, or talking on the phone.

Many hearing aids can now connect to your smartphone utilizing Bluetooth technology. The steps to connecting your smartphone to Bluetooth, and pairing with your hearing aids, varies by hearing aid model and by smartphone. We’ve put together some general instructions to help you get started: If screen shows hearing aids and phone are not connected (red “X”): Double click “home” button and swipe “up” on app to close Open/close hearing aid battery doors OR place hearing aids back in the charger for 5 seconds and remove Open app and you will see a white bar loading on bottom Hearing aids should now be connected If hearing aids still do not connect: Close the app (double click the home button and swipe up on the app) Open up “settings” Find “general” Click on “accessibility” – **In phones with the newest iOs update, the accessibility menus will be just below the general menu. In phones running older iOs, the accessibility menus is within the “general” menu Scroll until you find “mfi Hearing devices” Make sure the text that says “[Patient’s name] Hearing Aids” is lit up in blue text If not- click on “forget hearing devices” Open/close battery doors Click on text that says “[Patient’s name] hearing aids” Select “Pair” (this will happen twice) NOW go back into the app and the hearing aids should be connected
Here are six ways to help keep wetness away from your hearing aids: 1.Avoid Moisture Altogether Remember to take your devices out of your ears before showering, hitting the pool, or getting into the hot tub, and be sure to store them in their own secure case rather than loose in a pocket or purse. 2.Wipe Them Down Wiping your devices daily with a clean, dry cloth helps clear moisture and debris and helps reduce the risk of damage. 3.Stay Vigilant Water-resistant hearing aids aren’t waterproof, so keep these types of devices out of the shower, pool, and hot tub, too. Otherwise, they can get damaged when immersed. 4.Use Hearing Aid Covers These handy helpers can aid in protecting your devices from water splashes and keep out dust and dirt, too. 5.Consider a Hearing Aid Dryer or Dehumidifier This small appliance not only dries and sanitizes your devices as you sleep but can also double as their regular storage container. 6.Keep a Hat On Hand You never know when an unexpected rain shower might crash your outdoor fun. Having a spare hat can help keep the rain off you as well as your hearing aids.

Hearing and heart problems may go hand in hand. For example: • Hearing loss can be more pronounced among those with a history of circulatory disorders, such as cardiovascular disease. • Cardiovascular disease may contribute to decreased hearing sensitivity by restricting blood flow to the structures of the inner ear. Supporting both your hearing and heart health, can include good habits such as: • Exercising regularly, with a doctor-approved activity regimen • Eating healthfully, especially whole foods that promote good nutrition • Limiting intake of saturated fats and cutting out artificial trans fats altogether • Getting regular physicals and hearing checkups to help stay atop overall health

Check out Dr. Eackles latest review! "When I had my yearly check-up with Dr. Eackles (one of Dr. Hecker's associates), I asked him about the mail order hearing aids that are now being offered at a much cheaper price. Without being the least bit condescending, he explained that the hearing aids from their office are as prescription glasses are to drug-store reading glasses. His answer was right on ... the ones you order by mail do work to make things louder -- but they're not specifically programmed and adjusted for the person's particular hearing loss. All I know is that since I've been seeing Dr. Eackles and wearing the aids every day, my memory has improved, as well as my relationship with the family members I live with. I no longer find myself sitting in a room or a theater full of people and having everybody laugh at something the speaker said -- and my not hearing it." - CF
