Returning to Your Home After a Hurricane:
1. Listen to local authorities for information and special instructions to returning home.
2. As soon as you make entry into your home, open all windows. Before any cleaning, take thorough pictures of your possessions and the damage, videos are also a great way to document your loss. While you are removing damaged items from your home, document each one on a loss list. Make sure to wear appropriate protective gear, such as gloves, goggles, boots and a mask. Check for any breaches in your attic and windows for windstorm and/or flood damage, and take photos of any breaches.
3. Do not touch electrical equipment if it is in standing water, or wet, without turning off the electricity at the main breaker first. If possible, avoid wading through water, there could be debris or downed power lines that can cause bodily injury.
4. Contact your insurance agent or company as soon as possible to alert them of a claim loss. Make sure to save all numbers for your adjusters.
