By order of the Fourth Judicial Circuit Chief Judge, the Effingham County Courthouse will be closed on Friday, July 24th, for COVID 19 cleaning and sanitation.
There will be no court proceedings and the Offices in the Courts Building will be closed to the public. Emergency filings should be directed to Effingham Circuit Clerk John Niemerg at 217/690-9132.
The Effingham County Office Building will be open during regular business hours as usual.

The Charleston Police Department would like to warn the local community, especially local businesses, about recent counterfeit twenty dollar bills that have been discovered in circulation. These bills may or may not have the same serial number, but more important to note, is the numerous locations on the bill where the word "replica" can be seen. Please refer to the attached photo for a recent bill turned in to us by a local bank. Please be diligent when taking cash payments and look for clues such as these before accepting said cash payment.
As 2020 comes to a close, H&H would like to recognize attorney Brent Holmes for his outstanding work and dedication to his clients. In 2020 alone, Brent obtained $5.75 million in total settlements for his clients. Covid-19 issues resulted in closed court houses, restricted court appearances, and cancelled depositions, mediations, and hearings. We are a little behind on sharing our good news but H&H is proud to announce that attorney Gina Vonderheide joined our firm in January 2021. Gina is a graduate of Stewardson-Strasburg High School, and attended undergrad at Millikin University where she graduated with honors.
After undergrad, Gina attended St. Louis University School of Law. Gina joins H&H after serving 2 terms as the Shelby County State’s Attorney, where she also served as a special prosecutor in both Effingham and Coles Counties.
Gina is a member of the Shelby County Bar Association and Coles Cumberland Bar Association, she is a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Strasburg and is active in her community as the 4H Leader of the Strasburg Tailtwisters 4H Club.
Gina lives in rural Stewardson with her husband Travis, their five children and three grandchildren.
