4 Ways to Help Your Kids Handle Divorce
Whether your kids are in their twenties or in kindergarten, there is no easy way to inform them about a divorce. Divorce can be one of the most challenging life events for your family, and it is important to impart this information as tactically as possible to your children with the right timing. Telling your kids the news is half the journey, but the other half lies in the navigation of the separation process. Here are 5 tips to help your kids handle separation in the healthiest way possible.
1. Manage conflict as much as possible. Arguments naturally occur during a divorce; however, when kids witness verbal disagreements it can lead to confusion and doubt. When you predict a verbal disagreement is about to occur, steer the conversation to a private location where your kids can’t hear or see the conversation. When children are young, it can be difficult to understand why you as parents are splitting up, and even more difficult to understand why arguments occur. It’s best in the long run to keep any arguments over legal, financial, and custodial topics between parents as well.
2. Don’t use kids as a therapist. Although most parents can’t imagine finding themselves guilty of this, it’s more common than you think. After all, when you are around your children most of the day and week it may feel natural to let them know how you are feeling during this major life event. However, do your best to keep your emotional battle in your support group or therapist’s office. Doing so will keep your kids’ vision of both you and your spouse unbiased in the separation process and allow healthy relationships to remain intact. Instead of discussing divorce issues with your kids, have a close friend or relative you can talk to behind closed doors about your feelings. Remain honest, but resist the urge to share everything to your children.
3. Keep daily routines intact. Divorce can throw a wrench in the daily mix and definitely make things a challenge to keep “normal.” However, making sure your kids have a relatively steady routine in the process of separation can help your family navigate divorce healthfully. Work with your ex-spouse’s schedule to maintain a new and easy to navigate routine for both you and your kids. Visitation, school, work, and after-school activities can all be considered when drafting your new routines. Once there is a level of consistency in the daily schedule, your family will be able to maintain a healthy lifestyle easier.
4. Support the relationship between your kids and your ex-spouse. Although the relationship with you and your spouse may be ended, your family is still connected through your children’s relationships with either parent. To foster healthy bonds and clear communication between all parties, encourage involvement from your ex-spouse in your kids lives. Make recommendations about how to spend visitations or let them know how your kids are feeling and how they can help. Keeping a clear line of communication between you and your ex-spouse about your children will foster healthy relationships in your family.
Managing the divorce is no easy task and can be unpredictable for both parents involved. However, as long as parents have the kids mental and emotional health at the center of the process, then your kids will be better equipped to handle the separation and continue to have strong relationships with both parents after the divorce.
