Did you know that the first automatic dishwasher was invented by a Central Illinois housewife?
In 1886, Josephine Garis Cochrane, frustrated at the time it took to do the chore, sat down for 30 minutes and sketched out the basic concept for the contraption. She then hired a mechanical engineer to build a prototype in a shed behind her house in Shelbyville. After trying several changes to her design (what would a housewife know about mechanical design?), all of which failed, he returned to Cochrane's concept, which worked.
In 1893, the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, only four hours away by train, offered inventors like Cochrane a forum to demonstrate new devices. Her washing machine was installed there in nine restaurants on the grounds and became a huge success. She then started the Crescent Washing Machine Company, selling mainly to commercial establishments. When Cochrane passed in 1913, her company was sold to KitchenAid. In 1949, KitchenAid dishwashers based on Cochrane's design were sold to the general public.
